Mognily Idea

Barring some magically acquisitions, the Rangers will enter the season w/ a sizeable chunk of caproom available.

Would you take on Mognily's last contract year from the Devils for let's say, a 2nd round pick?

There will always be people on the board that want Lou to reap the rewards for his mistakes, but a high round pick would be very nice.

Other option would be to take Mognily and *Enter Other Devil Here* for a low round pick option. This option wouldn't materialize for the Rangers as trading cross-river is EXTREMELY RARE.

As much as I like Lou squirming, 3.5 million off his cap helps, but doesn't fix everything (still would have to firesale a piece or two). Therefore, why not profit from this?

Lastly, Mognily would NEVER wear a Rangers jersey. I would advocate sending him home and let that be it.

Thing is, if they do that they can sign Gomez long term.

I'd almost want full value for Gomez coming back here in a way.

All this does is help the Devils, even if Moginly does well.

Forget that.

That was what I was suggesting...the Rangers giving up anything is sheer madness.

Bottomline, this is a league of 30 teams, and presented w/ the deal of Mogilny + a 2nd round pick for 7th round (or enter AHL fodder here), there is a team out there that would take this deal (and even try to use Mogilny, which I'm not advocating). The net result is the same, but in one instance, the Rangers get a pick, in the other, the Rangers get absolutely nothing.

As it currently stands, Lou will have to make a deal. Where it is and for what is to be determined.

why would we ever help them out for anyone short of an all star player?

Could you trade a 7th rd pick for Patrice Bergeron, Jonathan Cheechoo, Jordan Leopold?

Those players were all 2nd round picks. I'm well aware that there is also a boatload of crap in the 2nd round, but in the middle of a supposed rebuild, any draft pick adds to the cause.

Now if people want to make the argument that we should trade for a Devil's roster player, so be it.

If this was the Phoenix Coyotes in cap problems, you would here a resounding yes on this board. The Rangers becoming a powerhouse is completely INDEPENDANT of how well the Devil's fare.

The Devils and Rangers have never been trading partners.

That goes w/out saying and is a listed caveat in the first post. Lou and the Devils have never been possibly over the cap by 8 million either. Beggers can't be choosers.

The main crux of the argument is not could, but would.

Overall, would anyone accept a trade where the Rangers benefit to help the Devil's in the short term.

My position is an unpopular yes, b/c I feel strongly enough that the Rangers fortunes are mutually exclusive than the fortunes of the Devils.

Sure we could, but WHY? Why help this team's most hated rival solve a problem? Why help them free up some money so they can sign someone and get better? Why do it for an over the hill player that was part of the problem for the Devils last year--the Devils didn't miss him at all after waiving him.

Who cares about a 2nd round draft pick? Whatever help we get from some "diamond in the rough" 3-5 years down the line doesn't outweigh the cost of getting there.

In short: HELL NO.

Your kidding right? Sorry Hale and especially the slew footed White does not have me taking Mogilny and the problems he's costing the Devils right now off their hands.

Yes! GREAT IDEA! Let us help the Devils out of any form of salary cap hell that they might have for the next year or two. I'm not being sarcastic..not at all!

The proverbial bucket of urine comes to mind with visions of Lou on fire. I know as a decent human I shouldn't give it to him and yet I cannot find the strength, nay, the will to give it to him.

In other words: why in God's green earth would we ever, ever help the Devils. Are you not enjoying their discomfort? I am.

If they want rid of Mogilny then they better be willing to part with a first round pick.

I probably wouldn't do it either (short of getting a major prospect or a 1st) but can we lay of frozenrubber a bit? It was a hypothetical question and it's not exactly stupid, even if it is unpopular.

Some team may go for this, but certainly not the Rangers.

Could you imagine the Jets helping the Patriots get out of cap hell?

Of course they're mutually exclusive, and it's also just smart business. The Devils will be out of their financial problems in two years (and with them keeping Elias we might reasonably wonder just how dire their supposed straits are anyway). Meanwhile the Rangers deny them a draft pick next year and might benefit for a decade or more with that draft pick. I'd absolutely do it.

I wouldn't be too sure Dedalus. A 6 year NMC contract for Brodeur at 5.2 mil per until he is 40. A 7 year NMC contract at 6mil per until he is 37. Long term contracts for Langenbrunner and White into their mid 30's. Next is Gomez and Gionta. These are all very good players but only one of them has been really elite but a goalie at 40 who can tell how good he'll be. Devil fans say they're locking up their key assets but the kind of guys that a team should be locking up like this are much younger like LeCavalier or Kovalchuk or Crosby. Proposing several years down the road that a player will still be worthwhile into his mid 30's or to the age of 40 is insane to me.

Well that depends on the player, but I don't necessarily disagree. The thing is that Elias's contract is an issue separate from those caused by the M&M signings. Lou may or may not have caused himself trouble down the road by that deal. What we can definitively say is that Lou is apparently in some degree of trouble right now, and the Blueshirts can capitalize on the Devils' woes right now. This is an opportunity that will go away as the Devils climb out of the hole made by the M&M signings AND as the Rangers start losing cap space from re-signing their own FAs to more lucrative deals and (as the team improves) starts looking for high-value UFAs to pluck from other teams.

I can see the argument about helping the other team, but my interest in helping the Rangers outweighs that by a country mile.
