What would it take? Just imagine Crosby-Malkin-Ovechkin, Letang, Neal on the PP. The Pens have a surplus of gritty wingers and at least one, maybe two will be gone at the end of the year. These guys who have won and know what it takes is what WSH needs right now.
How about Kunitz, Depres, Tangradi, Kennedy and two 1st round picks for Ovy and Laich? Could probably convert Laich to wing in the top 6. Pens have so many gritty wingers, they could lose two and easily fill the holes.
WSH loses their best player but they would still have Backstrom and this would become his team, who I think is more than ready to build an offense around. They add experience, grit and become much deeper. In fact this trade completely changes the mold of WSHs offense especially with Forsberg and Kuznetzov coming.

Why don't you think about a few things before bringing something like this out on the table. For one, there is a salary cap in place in the NHL. Those 5 you mention would take up 75% of the cap room. Secondly, Crosby and OV can't stand each other. They wouldn't be able to co-exist. OV would be second or third fiddle on the team - he couldn't handle that. Finally, the guy is a cancer. Have no desire to acquire him at all.
I'm pretty sure if Ovechkin was traded and one of Crosby or Malkin wasn't coming back that the Pens would have to part with either Letang or Neal, if not both. Especially if you add Laich in. Heck just for cap reasons they'd have to move at least 1 or 2 of those names. I don't think a Chris Kunitz-centered proposal would look very enticing to the Caps.
This is a horrible trade for both teams. The Pens couldn't have Crosby, Malkin, and Ovechkin's contracts and flesh out a contending team, and the return for Washington has way too little in terms of established talent.
Can we stop with these dumb threads. Its never going to happen. Caps arent going to trade ovi for spare parts. Ovi has had 2 down years but still had 70 goals in 2 years, still better then most players in the nhl.
sorry, the 18 Ovechkin for spare parts threads that pop up every day are getting kinda old. This must he how Avs fans feel with every Staz/Duchene/O'Reilly to Toronto for MacArthur and a 2nd thread.
Yeah, but Staz/Duchene/O'Reilly aren't the best player in the world.
You don't start a discussion with the best player in the world.
Anyway...I'm sure there's mutual disinterest in any deal happening on both sides anyway. I certainly wouldn't be willing to sell the farm for a question mark with the largest cap hit in the league, especially not when we have Malkin and Letang hitting UFA status in a year and a half.
“The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile, but that it is indifferent. If we can come to terms with this indifference and accept the challenges of life within the boundaries of death, our existence as a species can have genuine meaning and fulfillment. However vast the darkness, we must supply our own light.” - Stanley Kubrick
