They were a team that struggled to score goals last year, and during their Cup run their lack of defensive depth in their system wasn't exposed because they didn't have any significant injuries during the playoffs. They were massively over-rated by hockey analysts on eastern conference centric networks, and a lot of people bought it. Sure, it's only 10 games, but that's like being 19 games into a normal season with a losing record.

Now that they are facing adversity, their lack of defensive depth has been exposed. It's prudent to have at least 8 D-men around that you are comfortable slotting into the line-up, and if you don't your team lacks depth. Quick is playing hurt with a lingering back injury. Good thing they re-upped him to that 10 year contract before the back surgery and after his Conn Smyth, when his negotiating power was at an all-time high.

2 shutdown D injured and replaced with 2 #7 defensemen. Goalie coming off back surgery who has started every game so far this year (not sure if any other team has had 1 goalie start every game this season). Quick need a game off or two and King needs to be sent down and replaced with Toffoli. A minor league call up last season shook up the team so its worth a shot again this season

They got ridiculously hot at the right time when they won the Cup.

They caught fire at the right time, rolled through the playoffs like a buzzsaw. Stands to reason that's a level of play they could not maintain, that they are a little less motivated after an achievement like that. Also they are missing some key players, Mitchell and Greene are important guys for them. Sutter's teams play better when they're playing a disciplined system and are tightly coached, the lack of training camp and practice time hurts them. They will bounce back, for sure.

It's difficult to say if this is just a team that is built to win a series (which they proved they were capable of last year). They have yet to prove that they can put together a consistent performance over the course of a season.

What's overlooked is that they are one of the youngest teams in the league and lack experience on the blueline right now. After Rob Scuderi, their most experience defenseman is Drew Doughty.

To make matters worse, this is a team that just continues to struggle offensively. It's not just one or two players struggling to score, it's the entire team. If they could get going (and remain healthy) then they're a dangerous team, as we witnessed during the playoffs.

Surprised this was brought up. They actually are dominating possession and shots, they just haven't been getting breaks and the pucks haven't been going in, while we have two of our top defensive defensemen out due to injuries, we've been giving up more goals than usual.

Their stats still remain very good. Sooner or later, if they keep playing like they are lately, the numbers will catch up with them and they will win more games and put stats up in the most important columns. In-game, they've been stellar. Just crazy bad bounces at the wrong times have put them behind.

Quick had one helluva year last year. Lots of solid goalies have had great years like that, and never been able to repeat it.

They are back to form.

The Kings playoffs 2012 were a creation of the Vancouver Canucks. They got just the right amount of momentum out of that series to get the job done.

They were 40-42 last year. It's not overly shocking, we've seen them play mediocre before.

Quick had a amazing year, and its unlikely he will repeat it to the same extent, yet they still almost missed the playoffs.

this

I've been saying similar things during the offseason when people were screaming repeat, but I was just a bitter fan. I would love to see them win again, but it's extremely unlikely

As a result, the 2012-13 Canucks should have their name on the Stanley Cup, with a note stating that they did it while playing with injuries.

Howard isn't that good. Especially in the playoffs.

They were 29th in scoring during the regular season last year, and they are 29th in scoring so far this year. The Cinderella effect: after the ball, their carriage turned back into a pumpkin.

The Kings are the best puck-possession team in the NHL.

Things will turn around for them.

Before jumping to conclusions I'll wait to see what the Kings do when they get back home. Some teams start well with a heavy dose of road games. Some don't. The Kings obviously don't.

Likely a lack of motivation. The fact that they were such a star studded lineup that couldn't translate into having regular season success last year already made me start to question some of their star players drive to succeed. I think some of their players could be under the "pro athlete millionaire living in california" spell, and don't necessarily have the motivation to push their training and preparation to the next level unless they are in a short playoff series rather than over a course of a season. And the fact that the entire team just won a championship doesn't help things either.

It's called a slump. It only looks like a long trend because we are only playing half the games we did last year.

They will come back to true form. I don't think they are top of the class good but they will have a good shot at the division.
