so? He is basically Eric Lindros 2.0. If he doesn't want to play for this team, **** him.
Who said he doesn't want to play for the Avs? He just doesn't want to sign an insulting contract that's way below his worth. I'm sure if they'd offered him a standard, solid contract for a player of his ability (around $4.5 mil per year for 5 years) then he'd be happily signed before the start of the season.

He isn't worth $4.6-5m. Instead of signing a deal he is holding out for more money, seems like he really doesn't care about playing hockey to me. He is putting himself above his team, we don't need a ****** like that. Let him sit the year and then trade his ass at the draft for the top pick.
What i find extremely funny is that everybody on this board ripping on Subban at first for not taking the bridge contract, because he wanted more. But it's ok for O'reily to do the exact same thing, but not be attacked for doing so. This board has personal vendettas for some people, its quite sickening to be honest.
"Most people around O’Reilly expect the Avs to trade him now. I’ll tell you this: when/if O’Reilly plays for another team, expect a good healthy rivalry between him and Matt Duchene every time they play. Plenty of people around O’Reilly are blaming Duchene for taking “short money” on a two-year deal, which effectively set the bar for O’Reilly, one the Avs won’t go over."

As panger would say, ROR is doing it the white way.

Note to Duchene: you should have been more selfish and demanded a contract you are not worth.
Seriously though, if that's true, that is pathetic
No, not at all. But Duchene took a contract that is vastly below his value.
He could have easily gotten 4 million on a bridge deal and it would STILL be considered a "discount" based on what other contracts have been signed for.

Stastny was over a PPG for his career at the signing of his contract. The previous GM took a risk that Stastny would keep up that pace, and he hasn't. So in hindsight he is overpaid slightly, but at the time of the signing it wasn't bad.
The comments about Duchene from O'Reilly and his "camp" are disconcerting.
I think Newport made a serious miscalculation with this negotiation.
I don't think the Avs will trade him this season. He has more value after this season as he will have 5 years until UFA status as he will have lost a year of service.

Agree. Unless the package is perfect (top 3 Dman must be included) or a huge multi player upgrade to a healthy starting roster, Avs can sit longer than O'Reilly can.
Yup we overpaid for Stastny. Why? Because LA gave Kopitar $6.8.
At the time Stastny was the more productive player and we had to give him market value and it didn't work out for us.
That is why Colorado isn't going to overpay for O'Reilly, he isn't a superstar to deserve that kind of money.
Jones? Maybe but he was a UFA and they always get overpaid. We shall see on that.
The Paul Stastny deal was made under the previous GM (Francois Giguere), who also signed Brett Clark at 3.5 million per, Scott Hannan at 4.5 million per, and Ryan Smyth at 6.25 million per.
The David Jones deal, however, is correctly pointed out as terrible. He was given the Drew Stafford contract despite being more erratic and less productive in his career.
