Derick Brassard Available?

Per Elliotte Friedman's 30 Thoughts column

Quote:
Who is available?...Once again, Derick Brassard's name is coming up. That's been an uneasy marriage, to say the least. The Columbus Blue Jackets have three first-round picks next year -- their own and one each from the Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers. I can't imagine they'd trade their own for anything less than a superstud, but the other two are strong commodities in a deep draft.
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/opin...-no-fluke.html

I'm honestly amazed Brassard is still there, there have been rumors about him for years, but this year with Nash departing and him having a real chance to cement his spot on the team, he's been pushed out of the center position and is just middling. Still, you have to imagine teams are interested in a young centerman who could maybe center a Top 2 line, especially if you feel like he was being mishandled (Not saying he was!).

Ottawa has been interested in Brassard since his draft.

Figuring out the + would be... awkward. At least, it has been in prior threads. The problem is that we can't really add anything that would help Colorado without unbalancing the trade.

I would think that there would be several possiblities. Savard or either of NY/LA's 1st rounder would be a significant sweetner.

Or is COL looking for immediate help (in addition to Brassard)? Because that makes more sense.

Since Desharnais will be gone before the begining of next season, i could see Montreal trying to meet their french quota by acquiring Brassard.

I'd take a long hard look at Brassard + LA 1st for ROR.

That's not really... ironic.

Anyways, I wouldn't mind if Ottawa would took a look, but I doubt that they would give any serious attention to his availability if Silfverberg was what they wanted in return.

I'd think they'd look at him as a stop gap to help replace Spezza for the rest of the year. Picks + Bishop I imagine would be all we'd look to give. Understandable if that doesn't do it.

EDIT: Thought he was UFA at year's end. Doubt Ottawa is interested then. Acquiring him for the long-term was a pre-Turris thing.

Wahh? I thought he was an incredible playmaker, better than any center the Leafs have. A midget Joe Thornton. At least thats what I was hearing from my Habs friends when they game wasn't being played on the ice./

About Brassard, I can't help but think he really doesn't want to be in Columbus. Set him free..

I was assuming the latter. Trading any of the 1sts makes no sense for Columbus.

If the deal includes Bishop, it probably will not happen.

If you're looking for a stopgap, yeah, he's not an ideal selection there because of his contract.

Hard to argue with that reasoning. You got to do what you gotta do.

Would Cole + work for Columbus? Comparable's like Nash went for a lot more then that, what would Montreal have to add to make it work.

Stupid question - at 25 years old why does anyone think he hasn't reached his likely potential already?? What has he done in the league to think he has another level to get to? He would be a low-end 2nd line center. There are plenty of those around.

Ideally, one of your 2nds. Not the highest in that round (that's silly), but middle or late round. If there's any way to make it a retained salary deal, that would also be ridiculously awesome... but that's probably asking too much.

Not really. We have small skilled setup guys and expect to add similar skillsets in the draft. It's not bad but it's not what we're looking for.

With decent wingers I could see Brassard getting 45 - 55 points consistently in the NHL which is what a good 2nd line centre gets nowadays. If we needed a 1st line centre I could see your point but that's not what I'm looking for in Brassard.

I'd be willing to retain some salary, say a million a year and our middle 2nd round pick to make the trade.

I wonder if Brassard + Golobef could lead to a trade with Washington for Joel Ward and a 2nd?

Not including Cody. Definitely not including Cody.

Ward and Washington's 2nd isn't horrible, but I'm liking some of the other options here more so far.
