For fun, our list would probably look something like

Lundqvist
McDonagh
Staal
Del Zotto
Girardi
McIlrath
Gaborik
Nash
Richards
Stepan
Hagelin
Kreider
Miller
Callahan
Boyle

Is that far off?

I have a funny feeling that a guy like Brian Boyle has expansion team written all over him...He just seems like the expansion type of player when I think back to all the expansion teams that have entered the league that I am familiar with since 72 . He likely becomes a 2nd line guy on an expansion team with an A on his jersey .

I'm unsure if players in the AHL are effected. If not, then Stralman would probably be protected, the way he's played the last two years.

Otherwise that would be my guess for the protected list.

I'm really not enamored with the idea of league expansion. Relocation first, then see if the relocated teams can bounce back instead of continuing to drag the league down.

The last thing this league needs is expansion.

Unsure if expansion would hurt or help.

We know the league would make more money, short term, if they did expand. And if they go with the 4 conference realignment plan, it would allow them to divide each conference equally in numbers.

It opens more jobs for players, which the NHLPA would love.

It opens more jobs for hockey people and everyday folk as well.

The downside would be further diluting the talent across the league. And no one knows how the new teams and cities would do financially. And the league is having issues sustaining a 30 team league as it is.

No way they contract. And relocation is frowned upon.

IMO, they will eventually expand by at least two. There's a lot of potential revenue to be had that the NHL may just not hold back.

I would be okay with expansion, if they added the teams in Hamilton and Quebec City. Need to reinforce the strong markets.

Doesn't dilution of talent lead to higher scoring races from star players? That could turn into a good marketing tool for the NHL.

They need to contact 2 teams to get to an even 28, they wont but they should. Cant even sustain 30 teams

It's far too logical to put a team where hockey is already embraced and where cities-worth of fans have been clamoring for a big league team. They need to expand the fan base and put a team in Hawaii first.

I was thinking Brazil.

But in all honesty, if PHX doesn't move to Seattle (which I think they are right?), then expand one team there and one team in Hamilton. If they move to Seattle, (2) more Canadian teams.

I have always wondered how a team in Milwaukee would do. Anyone have an idea? Or Northeast of Boston?

They could if they put the teams in real hockey markets. Toronto could easily support another team, Quebec City, maybe Seattle. I think 32 is actually possible. Just not in the desert...

I think PHX would do well actually, they just needed a more solid ownership group and some patience. One has to think that it takes 20 years for an organization to start to get a real foothold on the area. Get kids to the games, the kids grow up, 20 years later they have the money to support the team. Lifelong fans.

There needs to be a 2nd team in Toronto. Its a joke that there is only one team in Toronto. Three teams in the NY area. Two teams in southern California. Toronto is the richest hockey market in the NHL. There are plans to build a new arena in Markham,Ontario but that's in flux. That team will be worth gold. The NHL will expand into Toronto just to get the expansion fee which goes towards the owners. The players don't get a penny of that. That's not going to happen for a while. The Coyotes moving to Seattle is based on the Kings sale being approved by the NBA. Seattle will build a new arena if they can land the Kings and move them to Seattle. The group purchasing the Kings doesn't want to purchase the NHL team. Another group will need to purchase the Coyotes and move them to Seattle.

I personally am sick and tired of hearing about Quebec City. That city lost the Nordiques because they were the smallest city to have a team: smaller than Buffalo!

Hamilton, I have no problem with, but if you want a team that will surely not lose any money, not have owners complaining to the league that they are losing money and possibly not be frugal when it comes to FA, the league's best bet is to put a team in Seattle considering the fact that city wants to put up an arena that will field both a basketball and hockey team.

Isn't there something in the NHL where a team has to approve another team moving close to them. For example, didn't the Rangers have to OK the islanders move to Brooklyn?

I like Halifax and Regina for NHL cities, obviously Toronto could support another team but there is so much history with the Leafs. I visit Ottawa frequently and you see it there, there are more TML fans than Senators fans.

Good for B-Dub. I know he got his payday and started regressing after that, but I just don't get the animosity towards him by some people on here. Real heart and soul guy who was among my favorite Rangers the last few years, even last season. Really hope we see him back in Ranger blue at some point.

I agree. Yea he was overpaid but he was a good team guy and was always the first to stick up for teammates. Things like that can help a team. He also fought Ovechkin and called Crosby a baby on TV

I'm pretty sure I can count the number of people at the Islander game tonight.
