Petr Sykora and Sergei Samsonov CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

They're not particularly big and muscled but they can score, we need goals!

Think about it, okay, he's all washed up and may never score again but he may certainly be an improvement ove Jan Bulis and we can stick him on the Kovalev-Ribeiro line, he would add some chemistry to our team.
He's not that bad, and plus he can score in shootouts.
He's a nifty scorer, with the proper linemates he can do it again, we don't have any Patrik Elias or Jamie Langenbrunner but at the bitter most, Sykora mught work.

Samsonov doesn't have Glen Murray or Joe Thornton anymore but with Kovalev and Ribeiro he would work nicely, we need another piece of the puzzle, a scorer, and a big line 2 centre.

Ribs+Aebi for a nice line 2 centre anyone? We can even throw in Zednik.

Samsonov in Edmonton is what we should expect.

If that's all Gainey can muster with all the assets at his disposal... then no thank you. Tired of cop-out signings.

We have the best line two center in the league, his name is Saku Koivu.
We need a real first center first and foremost.

why don't we try Mike Peca then at a 1yr 1 mil, he could be a bargain.

Because Peca is worse than Koivu and you're dreaming in technicolor if you think Peca would want less than 3.5 million for a 1 year deal.

Long term, maybe.

Right now I think a 1 year deal to Samsonov would help.
It might be worth waiting to see who is in cap trouble at the start of the season before making a move however.

Sykora could make a difference
we could miss the playoffs easily with him in the line-up

Yes, long-term. Somewhere at the beginning of October.

I don't think there is a need for both Samsonov and Sykora.

I personally think Samsonov is a good move for the Habs. Yes, he is only 5-8 but he is 194 pounds. He is a good skater and skilled with the puck. He is turning only 28 this fall, and really is entering the prime of his career.

His career regular season stats are below:
Year Team GP G A Pts
1997-1998 BOS 81 22 25 47
1998-1999 BOS 79 25 26 51
1999-2000 BOS 77 19 26 45
2000-2001 BOS 82 29 46 75
2001-2002 BOS 74 29 41 70
2002-2003 BOS 8 5 6 11 8
2003-2004 BOS 58 17 23 40
2005-2006 B/E 74 23 30 53

Career postseason stats:
2005-2006 Oilers 24 4 11 15
2003-2004 Bruins 7 2 5 7
2002-2003 Bruins 5 0 2 2
2001-2002 Bruins 6 2 2 4
1998-1999 Bruins 11 3 1 4
1997-1998 Bruins 6 2 5 7

He is the the kind of player that should thrive in the new NHL. I also think he would like good as the LW on a line with Kovalev at RW.

I think a 2 or 3 year deal, at proper dollars, would be terrific. If he wants too much then goom-bye.

Yeah right, Sykora is still twice the player Perezhogin is despite 2 off-years. Until Perez can actually show he can score, he's useless to us. People remember the strong play during playoffs (no scoring) but forget the complete dissapearing act that he pulled after the first 15 games. He's got potential but until he actually puts it together, it's nothing but dreaming.

Kost has great potential, greater than Perez but he's still way too raw to start next year and to even compare him to a proven scorer like Samsonov is indicative the HF bias in favour of prospects. Samsonov is an easy 30 goal, 65-70 points guy who would go a long way to solidify our top 6. Problem is, we'd have to overpay because lots of teams in the running for him.

Theres is a bias because a lot of people think its the best strategy for the Montreal Canadiens to build from within instead of getting push-over hockey players on the down side of their career. If you dont understand yet, we are not shooting for the stanley cup during the 2006-2007 season.

Stop calling bias an opinion that is not yours. Thank you.

Then say they are better developemental assets, because they are not better hockey players. And while Sykora is on the downside, Samsonov is still in his prime.

Also it's not by signing Samsonov that we'll win the cup, it's about making the playoffs at this point. Because if we start with the current line-up we have, we're going to struggle to make it.

A convinced fan, nothing better than that. But I think Samsonov is a very good player.

Thing is Sykora or Sammy would take a spot from one of them and they would end up playing with Radek Bonk or in the stands. We all saw what Higgins did when he got ice time with Koivu and PP time. Same apply to Perez and Kosty , you cant keep them on the 4th line forever hoping they go on a rempage with 6min of ice time 5on5.

Like jcpenney said get a real force ala Shanahan or pass.

Whats so impressive about Samsonov? Too me hes Audette revisited with a bigger pricetag. Again he was totally invisible when it was important in the final. We have done those kind of bad moves from 1995 to 2001, where are we today?

Our prospects are better assets and could already possibly fill the same role, cheaper + it would be good for them in the long term, gaining confidence and experience.

The value of Shanahan isnt even in is production I think. Hes a pro and a good teacher. Would be very good for guys that are borderlines in their training habits like Ribeiro.

Perezhogin may actually be better than Sykora, who's barely good enough for the nhl. But, while i'm not a big fan of Samsonov, he's still better in the nhl that Kostitsyn is in the ahl...
