Nail needs a LH shot set up man, so I like this move.
Nail also needs to stop hiding in closed off passing lanes to get the pass.

He's got to go to the front of the net. He is a big player. If he learns how to screen the goalie, create havoc and chip in rebounds he will find success.

Smyth scratched? Great. Can't wait to hear Gregor whine about it on my drive home.

Very interested to see how the game goes without those two acting as anchors.

At the very least, Yak will get a few shots on the PP, now that Whitney isn't not-passing to him.

I can understand why. The guy took a lot of heat after the weekend and then yesterday again. From Smyth's standpoint what more is he going to say that he hasn't said the past few days.

Barring injury to a player, his best bet to return to the line-up is if Eager finds himself in the doghouse.

I'm pretty sure Petrell, Paajarvi, and Hartikainen are all a tier above Smyth on the depth chart right now. Smyth is on the bottom tier, with Eager and Vande Velde. Vande Velde could also crap the bed, and that may convince Kreuger to give Smyth another shot at center.

Having said all this, when Jones returns, its another bottom-six winger ahead of Smyth on the depth chart. Smyth is no longer an everyday player on this hockey team, and he no longer controls his own destiny. If guys ahead of him don't screw up, he won't be playing.

Hopefully Smyth being scratched this game will light a fire under him and we'll see him play up to his potential from here on out.

Or not.

Have two vets right now that have to be wondering what is left for their careers. Any chance either guy just retires mid-season?

@TSNRyanRishaug: Whitney very frustrated and not feeling great about his future in Edmonton. Says he wont ask for a trade, but thinks its a possibility.

Until he learns what his trade value is.

i'm not worried about smyth and couldn't honestly care less if his feelings are hurt. The guy did reasonably well for us last year (first half anyways) and told the media he would be happy and embrace a role of leadership for the kids.

He hasn't delivered, so he needs to sit his ass in the box.

Everyone has to be accountable.

He's made millions from the NHL and will step up like a man and help the team out after this wake up call, like expected

Thank god. Finally a coach that makes players accountable for obvious selfish penalties

Wow. We got outshot partially due to you being a useless pylon out there. This guy is so butt hurt and perplexed over being scratched? What an entitled a spoiled brat this guy is. Does he not understand how terrible he is playing right now?

Whitney didn't play. That's why he said it. Writing is on the wall, team gets outshot big time and they don't try get him back into the lineup.

I'm pretty sure he didn't play against the Blue Jackets.

It's more like: "we were that terrible defensively, but you still won't let me play?"
