I probably watch as much basketball as you but wow really? Basketball same category as darts bowling ...you need to get your head examined

This is a really bizarre move, especially considering modern pentathlon is being kept in the Olympics, and golf is being added. Modern pentathlon has to be the most obscure sport in the Olympics and, while I'm sure it's very hard to get good at, would seem like the most likely candidate for being dropped. Golf just doesn't require enough athleticism – nor does it have the historical attributes of sports like shooting and archery – to warrant being included.

There are other sports I would drop, like rhythmic gymnastics and synchronized swimming, but I can see from a cost-to-benefit ratio why they're being kept around.

Technically, untrue. While the original Olympic games did have a wrestling event (or pale), archeological records show evidence that pale had very little or no similarities to modern Greco-roman wrestling. There's actually more evidence that a style of MMA fighting existed in the ancient Greek Olympics (called pankration, described as a mix between wrestling and boxing) than wrestling.

That being said, I can see why name alone, wrestling should stay.

I'm happy wrestling gets the axe. They need to fix that sport before they get back. Judging became very shady these past olympics, and guys could win medals with lottery balls.

This is one of the stupidest posts I've ever read. Wrestling requires tons of athleticism.

I also know you were talking about basketball but that would be even more stupid and decided to save you the embarrassment.

The former head coach of the Finnish national wrestling team puts the blame on the international federation and how it conducts it's affairs. There's talk of money laundering by one major member nation and corruption as a result of that.

Dumb decision to drop wrestling, if anything should have been dropped, it should have been table tennis. Not because "it is not a sport" or any reason like that, but because it is way way way to dominated by 1 country.

I can understand why the IOC capped the number of sports, but they did it too early in my opinion. Wrestling, squash, and cricket (20/20) are way to popular not to have at the Olympics.

my brother wrestled in high school ... I have a feeling he doesn't give a fig ... but to me this is a disgusting ruling by the IOC, but really not shocked by it at all.

People who complain about this obviously didn't watch any wrestling in the olympics. It was a disgrace. If they fix the game to make it a real sport again, it should definitely be back.

And don't bag on Modern Pentathlon that was created specifically for the olympics, it may not be big, but it's one of the most classic sports in there, and it's not vile with corruption like wrestling.

While I can understand why this is happening, I still think this is a ****ing disaster.

Wrestling might not be one of the most important sports in terms of viewership, but it is still an essential Olympic sport and the summer Olympics are definitely a lesser event without it.

Hopefully this will serve as a wake-up call for the people in FILA, it's just a shame that it is the athletes who have to suffer when it is a bunch of old men in suits who are the culprits.

Money. Golf will get at least decent ratings, depending on how it's handled, and I'm sure that rugby will draw very well in Europe, South Africa, and Oceania.

All there is to it, really.

Because both are huge popular international sports. Golf has been in the Olympics before.
