Thirdly, no, he is not overpaid. He's a top 5 defenseman IN THE ENTIRE NHL. There are 6 forwards in the NHL with higher cap hits, defense is the more important position IMO anyway so why shouldn't he be paid that high? You can't really compare contracts of comparing defensemen either because who of similar quality signed recently? The cap keeps going up and up. You can't look at a signing as overpaid or underpaid based on what their cap hit is, you have to look at it based on what percentage of a team cap hit they take up. As the salary cap goes up, the player's salary is going to go up...
Well no **** he's overpaid but how many free agents don't get overpaid for? Not many. Wild fans aren't gonna complain about the money issues because we still have a lot of money coming off the books in the next couple of years.

Maybe Keith is now underpaid and I can name maybe 5-6 guys I would take over Suter and almost all of them either make very close to what Suter makes or will when they are due for their next contract.
I would take all these players before Suter right now.

Keith is underpaid by at least $1.5M if referring to his cap hit alone. He is a top-five defenseman in the NHL.

I think Suter is good, but he's not an elite in my opinion - I could name 5-10 more I would gladly take over Suter but I think I've proven my point.
In conclusion, I believe he is being overpaid but that doesn't mean he's a terrible player.
Is he overpaid? probably, but most free agents these days are. As for the defensemen you listed the bolded ones would be the only ones i take over him. Keith is very close also. Just think you're underrating him.
You can say that about every superstar UFA. But that is not the topic we are discussing.
It is, though, as many hold that overpaying for a player is a bad thing (I'm not one of those, but they do exist and there are many).
As for the question, yeah he's overpaid. But we knew he was going to be overpaid regardless of who signed him. That's just what happens when a really big name reaches Unrestricted Free Agency.

There are so many factors. Long term,I would take Pietrangelo and even Ekman-Larsson over him because they are on an upward trend, they are only going to get better. If we are talking about one cup run it's entirely different because of course I would rather have an experienced veteran in that situation; but in that same regard I would rather have Boyle for a Cup run as he has arguably been the best performing postseason defenceman the last 3-4 years.
He screwed the Wild be getting both long term security AND a high cap hit. I could see that contract being a huge liability in the future.
Secondly, I don't believe he's worth it. He's not the IMPACT defenseman that you give that type of contract to. I guess the Wild were desperate to sign a free agent. I still don't understand why they would unless they thought they were legitimate contenders-- which they are not.
I'm the biggest P.K. Subban fan on HF, but as of right now, you'd have to be bonkers to take him before Suter.
I'm actually not bonkers taking Subban over Suter - your claim to being Subban's "biggest fan" is questionable/debatable.
Let's look at some stats
Suter in 12 games
0 goals, 7 assists, 5 hits, 21 blocks, 3 powerplay points, 0 shorthanded points
Subban in 5 games
2 goals, 2 assists, 6 hits, 8 blocks, 3 powerplay points, 0 shorthanded points
Suter's played more than double the games and the only thing he is doing respectfully better is in blocking, other than that - I'll take Subban over Suter any day.
Both players' teams have equal performance.
I'm not a stat-whhore (avoiding profanity) and won't conclude Subban is better because his stats are a little-bit better. Subban in my opinion, is a much better skater and shooter than Suter - he also hits a lot (clean hits). His fundamental hockey skills are more attractive than Suter.
