Owner: Do you think Howson is the worst GM in hockey history, or the second worst?
JD: I don't know, it's a difficult decision

If the Jackets wanted that, they wouldn't have fired Howson until the end of the season. The Nash trade, the Mason signing, and trading away three draft picks for a goalie like Bobrovsky is enough to get a GM canned.

RT @Aportzline: Told #CBJ very close to naming Howson's replacement. It will not be Davidson. A deal is close, next GM could be introduced Wednesday.

So, this is why it happened now. They were getting the next guy lined up.

I'd be surprised if Burke gets hired. Davidson has a strong hand, and he'll want someone to take his direction. I don't think Burke is the guy for that job.

I'm interested in seeing who the replacement is. Lots of work to do in Columbus, but hiring JD was a good start.

He had it coming. It's kind of sad that this season has been a good deal better than their past couple seasons.

A tad strange during this point of the season, but I doubt you'll find many people who will argue he needed to go.

About damn time. I haven't agreed with most things Howie has done.

Overdo. Hopefully the Jackets can get on the right track with someone new. I still think Richards should be the next to go.

While I think Burke would bring some real excitement to a franchise that does need it pretty badly and that he could do well in a smaller market, I don't think he'll be the new GM. Just a gut feeling.

Don't think Burke would want this GM gig if it was offered to him (which is a real if). Small market team, barely spend past the floor, hard time recruiting players. This is a GM job for a lesser name, probably first time GM.

Howson just didn't seem to have it, he hung on quite long time, a couple seasons late with the firing.

He did it with the Ducks, who weren't that big either back then.

It might just be what he and the Jackets need.

I don't think it'll happen, only because Davidson likely all ready has someone lined up, but I still think Burke could bring some life back to that franchise.

You may want to check that fact.

Burke wasn't recruiting players nor using the MLSE's resources to spend to the cap. The Blue Jackets being a floor team would probably make it easier for him to live by his principles.

I think so, when he left the Blues he went to run a team in Finland until he was ready, or somebody was ready to give him a GM job in the NHL. I think this is the perfect situation for him, familiar with JD and gets to build his own team

still have no idea how whatever howson did as assistant GM for one of the worst managed franchises got him a job as GM with another.

The short answer is that the Oilers were just a year removed from the run to the Finals when he was hired.
