Why are we even still responding to this guy? He picked apart my argument with facts that were dead wrong and obviously hasn't been watching any games this year.
I just wanted to quote myself because i didn't use a big enough font....

no matter how much we think we know or see about the team we are so far removed from their day to day planning and discussion and practice that it's ludicrous to draw definitive conclusions based on the data we do have. you could say, well i can tell weather or not they suck if they lose more than they win.. sure.. but you can't say why. i deal with this regularly (i'm a data analyst) and i promise you, conclusions based on limited or poor data are worthless. of course it's fun to bandy about our opinions and thoughts, but the dogmatic side of things drives me insane sometime.
do you realize how much film these guys break down? how every goal and goal against is logged and broken down multiple shifts prior? and how about this one: when a player is not positioned, or making decisions in accordance with how he was coached to play? we just don't have anywhere close to the same dataset as the people making decisions.

I literally lol'ed at this. What facts are dead wrong?

I see those events mainly as outbursts of frustration more than anything. It also generally takes less knowledge and skill to criticize than it does to create or solve. Just because we don't have all the information doesn't mean we're incapable of identifying problems and/or faults, it's our solutions that are usually ineffectual, narrow-minded, or just generally crappy.
But for the most part, I agree. I wish people would give the coaching staff a bit more benefit of the doubt.

I disagree with a lot of Gulutzan's decisions, but on the whole I give the staff the benefit of the doubt because they are being paid huge sums of money by people who generally know what they are doing to coach the team. Since we aren't the Islanders, I assume our front office is at least vaguely competent and that the staff's decisions, while odd to people who only get brief looks at the players like fans do, make sense to people who have access to a mind-boggling array of data on every player.
Benn definitely needs to work on faceoffs. He also needs to stay healthy for a full season and produce like many (including myself) believe he can produce; I'm not satisfied with pace arguments either. That being said, Benn is anything but bad in his own end. I haven't seen any argument to objectively suggest this is the case and my eyes tell me the opposite is true.

I'll say again: if he is so great at defense, why is he dead last among Stars centers in PK time, even against Eakin, basically a rookie? And I don't mean by a couple seconds, I mean significant time. The coaching staff does not seem convinced that Benn is benefit to the defense.

Oh please. The fact that Benn, the team's top center, is even on the PK at all is a huge testament to how good he is defensively. Most teams would save their top center's legs for ES and the PP but Benn is so good on the PK that he demands to be part of the rotation anyway.

Look at the shorthanded ice time of Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg the last few years and get back to me on that one.

I'd imagine it has something to do with Gulutzan wanting to spread the minutes out and utilize bottom 6 guys on the PK.
I remember when Jamie came back, Loui and Benn were the #1 PK unit. A few games later that seems to have stopped, and he's reverted back to using bottom 6 guys. I could be wrong though.
