I'm actually not bonkers taking Subban over Suter - your claim to being Subban's "biggest fan" is questionable/debatable.
Let's look at some stats
Suter in 12 games
0 goals, 7 assists, 5 hits, 21 blocks, 3 powerplay points, 0 shorthanded points
Subban in 5 games
2 goals, 2 assists, 6 hits, 8 blocks, 3 powerplay points, 0 shorthanded points
Suter's played more than double the games and the only thing he is doing respectfully better is in blocking, other than that - I'll take Subban over Suter any day.
Both players' teams have equal performance.
I'm not a stat-whhore (avoiding profanity) and won't conclude Subban is better because his stats are a little-bit better. Subban in my opinion, is a much better skater and shooter than Suter - he also hits a lot (clean hits). His fundamental hockey skills are more attractive than Suter.
You sir, are bonkers for claiming to be Subban's biggest fan and picking Suter over him. Good day
How do you determine what overpaid is? Compare him to an RFA who signed two years earlier? Compare him to the next highest paid defenseman who also signed probably years before him? At the time of his contract signing, he was the best defenseman on the market by far, and the cap was at $70M and looked to be increasing.
So, does he make more than other comparable defensemen? Absolutely. Does that necessarily mean he's "overpaid"? No. Is he overpaid? Probably a little, but not as much as some people think.
Will a 28 years old top-10 dman be worth 7,5M$ when he'll hit 41 years old? Maybe. At some point, Parise will lose his speed and he'll become an average top-6 player while Suter could still be playing 25 minutes a game. At some point, Wild fans will brag about the Suter's deal.
Of course he is overpaid. all top UFA who hit the market end up overpaid. I wanted him on the Wings, overpaid or not.
He should have stayed with Nashville though or gone to a team like the Rangers....teams that are closer to winning. I know Minnesota has top prospects or whatever, but how often have we heard that throughout the years with numerous teams only to hear said team fizzle out because they don't have the proper coaching staff or GM to build an actual team?
Suter's stats (especially in PO) do not suggest he is top-10 D in the league.
39 games played 4 goals 9 assist 13 points -4. Considering he was paired with Shea Weber and Pekks was the guy behind him. There are 15 defenders who have better PO stats better +/- and more points per game (Weber, Edler, Chara, Seidenberg (yep check on me), Keith, Seabrook, Kronwall, Doughty, Karlsson, Gonchar, Timonen, Letang, Boyle, Piets, Campbell).
Following guys have almost same stats as Suter +/- 5% :
Burns, Markov, Robidas, Green, Hamhuis I'm sure I forgot some. I'm not saying all of them are better players then he but he is definitely not top-10 in the league. There are 10 defenders I would take before Suter (all for different reasons)
EK, Piets, Weber, Seabrook, Chara, Doughty, OEL, Hedman, RMD and Keith
He is, but thats the price to pay for a Norris trophy calibre player. He's never won that trophy yet, but he is one of the best defencemens heading into the summer of 2012, and he was a UFA. He is overpaid, just like 80% of the players in the leauge. I think he will come together very soon. The last 2 times I saw him play the Canucks, he was "good" but not Ryan Suter good. Wild fans have yet to see the best of him. They say he is missing Shea Weber, well there was no Shea Weber when he played for team USA and he was one of USA's best players. Lets see what will happen.
People saying Karlsson are laughable. Kid had 1 good season, theres no way he maintains a 70 point pace as a Dman over his career, he probably ends up 50-60 consistently, and thats only 10-15 more then Suter. Suter is way better then karlsson at everything else.
Suter is better then Karlsson. Pietrangelo is arguable, but Karlsson is not.
I had always though the point of long term contracts was to lower the avg cap hit? Suter's is still 7.5M, which for a top 5 dman is good but it goes on until he is 40. I don't think he will be anywhere worth that contract from his 34-40 years. I would much rather have Keith on his deal then Suter's AINEC.
As for the topic of dmen better than him there are Chara, Weber, Karlsson & Pietrangelo, possibly Letang. I think in the coming years we will see OEL, Hedman, Letang pass him with even Jones, McDonagh & Doughty pass him.
