Two all-time greats. Though Sakic was absolutely phenomenal in 2000-2001, I don't think he ever reached the level of dominance displayed by Mikita from '63 to '68. Sakic has a better playoff resume but Mikita is the better hockey player.
Both great two way centres who had a comparable forward on a different line for most of their primes. Sakic has a longevity edge, though it is tempered somewhat when you consider the eras, and has a goal scoring edge. Mikita was better offensively and defensively overall, and his most dominant stretch of hockey (multiple seasons) is better than Sakic's pretty easily. Mikita by a clear, though not huge, margin.
My opinion is that the gap is closer than most people on the history board believe - Mikita put up his best numbers playing for a team that played a much more wide-open brand of hockey than the other 5 teams at the time. But he's still the winner in this poll.
