That's a tough loss for the Reds but West Brom was only 1 point back in the EPL standings going into that game so... West Brom has had a very nice season all in all though they have come back to earth in the second half of the season a decent amount.

Juve with ease...while Valencia at least kept their chances alive on the scoreboard.

Heard an intersesting call on the way home on Sirius...."how would Celtic do in the MLS today?". Harkes said Celtic would win it with ease largely because of their depth.

They would win the MLS pretty easily.

They have more talent over the long run, and they have WAY more depth.

MLS squads operate with a shoestring budget, and most don't have 4-5 quality substitute players (none the less an entire reserve side with decent ability).

A better discussion that has been had a while back would be a Championship level side. I think over the long run, the Championship side would probably be in the end run of the playoffs, but initially might take a bit to adjust.

Though, the MLS has improved a lot.

I have always wondered if you took a MLS all star team, including a decent amount of depth for the long campaign, and dropped them into whatever European league how would they do?

I've also heard Harkes recently say that a handful of good MLS teams could survive as lower half EPL teams.

Bolded the important part.

Just a guess, but I'd put them at "competing for Champions/Europa League finish" in.... Ligue 1.

Any league above the French league and they'd be bottom-half of the table. Anything below that and they'd contend for the league title.

I don't think there is any way they could regularly compete with the big 3 in France, PSV and Ajax in Holland, or the big 3 in Portugal. Sure now and then one of those teams has a down season or two but not regularly.

If it was that easy someone would buy a lower tier top division team in one of those leagues, buy said MLS all star team as it wouldn't be that expensive, and enjoy the regular Champions League windfall...

Harkes knows more than I do, but he's also a homer for the American game. He's trying to sell the MLS.

I think a few of the better MLS clubs could hang on in the relegation area, and maybe with a few buys and a lot of luck make it through. But we're talking barely.

I don't think they would do all that well in France. They're a lot better top to bottom than most know, and the scoring and pace would be hard to keep up with.

If you took an all star side (or at least a handpicked side) you can do more with it, but much of that talent isn't in the MLS because they're good footballers. They're here because that's their level. There are a few players who can go over and cut it, but most are second tier players in those leagues. Liga B, Serie B, Championship, Bundesliga II, are all leagues that all the MLS players could cut it in. Much more? Not week in and week out. A few, sure. Most, no chance.

Costa Rica protesting to FIFA the conditions of the game in their lost to US the other night. Snow in Colorado/visibility issues they say the game should never had been played. BTW they lost to the US 1-0.

Playing conditions and whether a game should be terminated or not played are a Referee's decision by the Laws of the Game and FIFA should not have any say in the matter (but we'll see).

Have to laugh at Costa Rica protesting the conditions at a game in the US when Central American teams have no problem with the US being hit by D cell batteries, bags of urine, bottles of beer from their fans in the stand when they play at the Central American stadiums or the polluted air at Aztec stadium. Hey what's good for the goose is good for the gander, that's the benefit for the home team in selecting their venue of choice to host these games and why the US always likes to opt for the colder locations to limit not only the other teams fan base but also expose them to conditions they are not accustomed to. US also noted that the selection of Colorado and its high altitude as the venue was in part in preparation for next week's game in Mexico at their high elevation.

Next time we are in Costa Rica and playing on a field with obvious tire treads on it, and large areas with no turf, remember this whining.

Yeah, a bit surprising, but if you add the two penalties that were ignored, probably a worse result. We'll take the point happily!

This is what happens when you embellish on every physical contact an opponent has with you. As game wears on it makes it difficult for the referee to distinguish between fantasy and reality when it comes to recognizing some fouls.

Great strike without a doubt. Reminded me of Ronald Koeman.

Of the teams fighting for the Champions League spots in the EPL Chelski has the toughest run in by far IMO plus the Europa League distraction so they are going to need some top class moments from all their stars.
