Southsiders treated horribly at Canucks-Wild Game

So I got some feedback from many of the Southsiders at the game last night(and you may have subscribed to twitter to find out).

Needless to say many of them will not be coming back after having such a bad experience. A Canucks representative, and not security, had a major power trip last night, and during the first period, not only told all the Southsiders to sit down (even though they were in a group in the back 4 rows not impeding anyone's view), but also told them that they could only stand up during goals.

It begs the question, what kind of atmosphere do the Canucks want at Rogers Arena? You have Fin coming around trying to start cheers, but yet when a trained group of supporters fills up the Molson Canadian section, and actually does a great job of getting the crowd going, you decide to snuff that out? It just doesn't make sense. I would way rather have those guys cheering than a fight breaking out once every three home games in that section because of overly drunk people.

I'm very disappointed at the reaction of other "fans" too, saying that the Southsiders were too loud and they complained as they preferred a quieter atmosphere so they could watch the game. To that I say, go watch it at home or grow up. This is a public sporting event with 20,000 people, with one of the best teams in the league. And now you've alienated a group of people who actually brought a little energy to the crowd.

Curious to hear other people's opinions on this matter.

Rogers Arena is so quiet, they added a much nicer atmosphere.

This is why I love the soccer atmosphere! I was watching a Celtic game yesterday, and boy, can the Irish ever sing.

Very disappointed in the Canucks and Rogers Arena. If you want people to "Make Some Noise" (TM), then actually let people MAKE SOME NOISE.

Well, I guess from now on when they do the "Worse Arena Crowd" thread in the main forums, we don't have any rebuttals =(

I don't think Rogers Arena needs to go full on "soccer/european" with chants and singing, but Ottawa fans have Alfie minute, Montreal has a great atmosphere with some chants and such.

There is a middle ground between the quiet library and singing/chanting that would create a great atmosphere.

Listening to team 1040 last night, quite a few people were complaining about them swearing, trying to light up a smoke and taking their pants off.
I don't have any problem with cheering loudly or standing up if they are not blocking anyone's view. However, if the above is true, then maybe we don't need that kind of fan at the game after all.

The friendly staff at Rogers Arena at it again. This place is really intimidating to visiting teams. Opposing coaches ready their players to play at Rogers Arena by practicing in complete silence.

I'm going to the game on Friday, and I wish the Southsiders were going to that game. Liven the place up a bit.

It's so god awful quiet most of the time. Most fans seem to be more concerned with checking their phones than watching the game.

I can sympathize a little with the concern for standing, but in this case, the Southsiders were in the very back of the arena - standing shouldn't be an issue.

Full disclosure: I am a new member of the Southsiders, but was not in attendance last night.

Personally i think the should bring back the organ and get rid of DJ whats his dirty nuts.

Everytime i watch a game from an arena with more traditional organ music it always seems lively.

Who the **** needs Black Eyed Peas during hockey.

My only question is, what are Irish people doing cheering for a Scottish football team?

That's the problem. There's always two sides to the story and while I'm a fan of the chanting and stuff, you could tell by some of the suggested songs (like the one about Heatley) that not all of their members are the most mature and respectful people.

I would absolutely prefer a stadium full of energy, but I kind of doubt that the Southsiders were as innocent as they claim to be.

Given the cost of tickets and the crappy atmosphere I prefer watching on a nice big HDTV these days.

Our building used to be a lot louder during the WCE days. Even when it started to quiet down you knew it would get crazy again when the playoffs started. I remember going crazy when we played the Stars and the Ducks. Those were loud games. These days even the playoff games are depressingly quiet.

I often have a hard time knowing when to get it started, tbh. I also often wonder what kind of a night tonight is going to be.

I'm sorry, but you do not get into this situation by simply cheering and making a bit of noise.

2 sides

From what I've seen, the Southsiders are into a bit of fun, but they're also image-conscious. Any behaviour that would shed a negative light on the group would be discouraged by the majority of the membership.

I don't doubt there was some shenanigans (I too heard a guy took his pants off in the 3rd and got escorted out - totally fair), but not being able to stand and cheer in the back 4 rows is a bit ridiculous.

THIS!

Celtic F.C are based in Glasgow, Scotland. Ever heard of the Celtic/Rangers rivalry? Their rivalry (among others) is due to the fact that they both reside in Glasgow with the Celts representing the catholic side & the Rangers being the protestant side. I suggest you look it up.

What's wrong with that?! You couldn't make me keep my pants on after Hansen's goal last night.

But seriously.. Rogers Arena is a joke. You could go to just about any other arena in the NHL and the atmosphere would stack up against ours. (Phoenix, Florida, etc) It's sickening.

Oh, absolutely. They should have been able to stand and cheer all game long if they were at the back of the arena. If that's all that they were actually doing, then shame on the people complaining about them and shame on the staff at Roger's Arena for kicking some of them out. However, if they were indeed swearing excessively (mostly only a concern if there were kids around), taking off clothes, smoking, etc, then I have no problem with them being escorted out.

Uh....the Irish bit is fair comment. There's boat loads of supporters from Northern Ireland at every home game for both teams.

I really wish we could send both those teams to Belfast so they can kick up all the trouble on their own turf. Well, more of it.

lol the southsiders are such a joke. It's hockey not soccer. I'm sorry that most of us like to watch the play develop. Soccer is boring, so obviously you can cheer and chant without missing any of the play. What else are you gonna do? Hockey has a lot more going on where we want to watch the play!! It'd be nice if it could be louder, but the tickets are expensive and people are entitled to do what they want. Canadians by nature are reserved.

To be fair a good few Irish make the trip over as its a ferry ride from Northern Ireland to Ayr and a train up to weegie land.
