Well, in the last 2 rookie camps, we had more than 1 tryout attend, but none of them made it. I'm sure the organization thought "why? waste spots in camp for players who probably won't make the team instead of using them for players who we originally drafted and are potential NHLers?"

On that note though, I wish Martin Frechette luck at rookie camp.

Dulac-Lemelin should be considered a try-out, Habs doesn't own his right anymore

True, but he hasn't re-entered the draft yet, perhaps this is a alst chance for him.

Since when was Lemelin signed by Hamilton? Perhaps he is being mistaken for Lacasse? The Habs failed to keep his rights for the draft, I hardly expect the Bulldogs then immediately turned around and signed him.

Doesn't mean he makes the team, as he can be sent down to the ECHL. But right now the Dogs are majorly thin on defense. Cote, Archer, Benoit, Sanford, Gleed and Dulac gives them 6 defense, 3 LD and 3 RD's. But they got to add a couple more guys.

I saw Lemelin play a couple times with Bathurst and he did look a little better then in the past but not much imo. He does have a long reach but seems a bit slow still.

They still can bring in more tryouts to the rookie camp. This way if they show something they can get an invite to Hamilton's camp which follows a couple days after the rookie tournament is over.

Michaud, Cote, Sanford, Benoit and Lemieux have all be signed after being tryouts, so I wouldn't say a waste of time, especially when the Dogs need to add defensemen.

Lemieux was never a tryout, he was signed in the middle of the season
Benoit was under contract with Hamilton when he came to rookie camp, then we signed him
Sanford: He eventually tried out, but again was signed in mid season
Cote and Michaud I'm not sure about

Lemieux was a tryout and was signed by Savard in Hamilton first. He was supposed to play in the ECHL but his hard work kept him in Hamilton according to Savard. His strong play got him a contract.

Benoit was encouraged to come to camp by Savard who personally said to him he thought he had a future with the Canadiens. He was signed to an AHL contract before the camp (perhaps as an incentive to come to camp, just guessing) I have heard Savard talk about Benoit and how much he likes his game. Benoit was signed by Gainey mid season.

Sanford was a tryout, was signed by the Habs then he wasn't resigned after his first year. Savard offered him an AHL contract. There was talk about problems with his weight/conditioning, which may or may not have been the reason why he wasn't resigned by Gainey. Sanford went on to lead the Bulldogs in scoring despite getting benched at times or shuffled around. Midseason he was signed to a 2 year contract by Gainey.

Cote was a tryout as was Michaud.

So yea all of them were tryouts but if you don't want to consider Benoit a tryout since he had an AHL contract already that works too.

If they weren't drafted or acquired in a trade.... then they are trying out for the team as free agents. This isn't rocket science.
