I think the only reason they wouldn't buy him out is that he's one more concussion from being done and has the hips of a 75 year old so retirement could be sooner rather than later. Maybe he works out a deal and gives him a job at the hot dog stand when he retires

This is the Islanders. They just traded for Thomas' contract.
They have a cap hit of 2.2 to Yashin, 5 to Thomas and 4.5 Dipietro and they just reached the floor. Why pay extra cash on a buy out to Dipietro just to reach floor going forward?
Although I agree Wang won't buyout RD, the Isles cap BEFORE the Thomas trade was $48/$49m. After the Thomas trade it's at $53m/$54m.
This season's floor is $44m.
Adding Thomas cap hit has nothing to do with DiPietro. Imo it was added, in case the isles move their impending ufas Streit+ Vis, who have a combined caphit of $9.7m and who would both draw interest at the trade deadline.
