Holy **** I agree with something Puckgenius says, this is madness!

Is his cap hit excessive in relation to his positioning in the NHL defencemen pantheon? Probably not.

Is his contract a bit of a failure in that the idea of a long term cap-circumventing contact is meant to keep the cap hit below that 'market price'. Yes.

That Suter deal is going to kill the Wild if their top prospects end up hitting their ceiling. Major cap troubles in 4 or 5 years.

Well we do have a couple amnesty buyouts to use.

Ahahahahaha.

Now I remember why I love looking at old threads. Brownie points to whoever bumped this.

Like nearly every big-name UFA signed on the open market, yes.

Yes he is on all accounts: current salary, caphit (slighty) and especially term. It will hurt Wild down the road but they got him (and Parise) for free so it isn't that bad. Hopefully cap goes up.

What? How does that have any effect on deciding how much salary Suter deserves. Plus PK will be a RFA attempting to re-sign with his current team. There's a big difference.

As of now:

Karlsson
Weber
Chara
Pietrangelo
Doughty
Letang
Keith
Suter

Only roughly in order, but Suter is the last on that list, in my opinion. There are also a number of defensemen who I'd consider over Suter.

OT: I think he's egregiously overpaid.

Are better than Suter.

Edler
Yandle
Staal
Phaneuf
Kronwall
Hamhuis

Are arguable.

McDonagh
Bogosian
Carlson
Hedman
Ekman-Larsson
Subban

Will be better in 2-3 years.
Perfect... can't believe I forgot Markov! How about Boyle? He's at least debatably better.

Definitely. However, with such a poor free agent class, there was a huge market for Suter, which drove up his price significantly. Minny had the cap room and wanted to transform their team into a contender in the west, so they bit the bullet and spent the extra $1-2M on him.
