I don't like that a team that finishes 17th overall could potentially win the #1 pick. I think they should have done something to prevent a team from repeatedly winning it though.

I think I'll wait until I see where the Leafs end up in the standings to decide.

Really though it's tricky, I mean I like that it at least gives hope to teams that just miss the playoffs (which is really the worst spot to be) to get a pay-off for the season, but you just know that as soon as a team that finishes outside the bottom 10 wins it people are going to cry foul-play. I think I'll go with yes, because as it stands it really sucks for teams that just miss the playoffs, and if you finish 30th and still don't pick 1st overall you've still got a great pick regardless.

Yeah, I like it. And, as opposed to previous years (not sure about this one), I think they should just keep picking until all the non-playoff teams are numbered. Don't just draw one team and then have the rest auto fill after based on records.

I like it. The Oilers will hopefully finish out of the bottom 5 and still get first overall pick

I'll like it if my team wins it, hate it if ours rivals win it.

I like it. Can't just tank and expect the #1 pick.

No. The teams at the bottom need the most help. This is basically tyranny of the majority at the cost of parity.

People that think teams still tank have no idea what they're talking about. Jobs and reputations are at stake. Nobody tanks.

However, as an Oiler fan with a team that should be moving upwards, I love it. If we don't make the playoffs, hopefully we can get lucky again.

it only affects one team does it not? even if you finish last and lose the the lottery you would still get the second overall pick i think. i think teams will still tank

The new system does very little to prevent that. Teams outside the top 5 rarely win the lottery.

Since the inception of the draft lottery in 1995, this new rule would have only made a difference in 3 drafts:
1995: Los Angeles moves from 3rd to 1st (originally 7th)
1999: Chicago moves from 4th to 1st (originally 8th)
2011: New Jersey moves from 4th to 1st (originally 8th)

All other drafts remain exactly the same, and even the drafts that do change order, are still very similar.

Voted no only because I think the change is pretty pointless and not dramatic enough. It's a small tweak that will likely not make a difference for a while.

Yup. Like it. Of course I am a fan of a so-so team who will now have a decent shot at the first pick. (yes, i really do think they are still considered NO WORSE than so-so)

Basically. The bottom teams will still likely win it most of the time, but this way it rewards teams less for tanking...which hopefully should add to the competitiveness at the end of the season.

Actually I'd like to include the teams that made the playoffs but got knocked out in the first round also get a shot. That way bubble teams that are trying to win can get that pick, maybe trade it or whatever, and possibly advance further...rewards teams for trying to make it.

RNH or Landeskog on the President trophy team would have been cool.

Celtics don't have Tim Duncan and I remember how that felt. Just heed the warnings fellas. A team will miss the playoffs by a few points, possibly having come off a decent cup run the year previously and are going to get an absolute stud. And then we will have a discussion on to revert back to the original rule.

I will say again, staggered pick mixing is really the way to go and I see it more and more in the future.

I can't wait till a 9th place team gets the top pick and these boards blow up. It seems like a nice idea but has the potential to blow up in your face.

Still worth the price as it removes deliberate tanking.

Personally I dont think its fair that a team could miss the playoffs by 1 point, finish 17th in the league and still have a chance to get the best pick. I realize that it is a small chance but still.

The worst teams should have the best picks, thats the only way they can get better.

And then Edmonton finishes 9th and gets Seth Jones or MacKinnon, how do you feel then?
