Sad news out of South Africa (Oscar Pistorius)

Apparently, Oscar Pestorius shot and killed his girlfriend thinking she was a robber

----------------------------
Mod edit to include September 11, 2014 ruling:

Judge: Pistorius can't be found guilty of murder

Quote:
PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) -- In a lengthy verdict phase climaxing Oscar Pistorius' trial, the judge said Thursday he can't be found guilty of murder but that he was negligent in the shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, raising the possibility he'll be convicted of culpable homicide.

Judge Thokozile Masipa said she felt the double-amputee Olympian acted negligently when he fatally shot Steenkamp through a toilet door in his home in the predawn hours of Valentine's Day last year. In a moment of high-drama, she then stopped reading out her judgment in the six-month-long trial and adjourned until Friday. A formal judgment in the case that has riveted much of South Africa and the world is expected on Friday.

If Pistorius is acquitted of murder, he could still be sent to jail for years if convicted of culpable homicide.

Guilty of Culpable Homicide

August 2015 update:

Quote:
(CNN)—After serving 10 months for shooting his girlfriend to death, Paralympic runner Oscar Pistorius is expected to be freed from prison in South Africa and go into house arrest Friday.

Pistorius was sentenced to five years in prison in October 2014 after he was convicted of killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine's Day two years ago.

Who is going to believe that? I've perused the evidence and conclude that he doesn't have a leg to stand on.

Pretoria police spokeswoman Denise Beukes confirmed he had been charged with murder, adding they had been called to his home on several occasions since 2011 to deal with 'allegations of a domestic nature'.

According to Gawker, there had been a history of domestic disputes at their home. Just awful...

Not 100% correct. She doesn't live there and they've only been dating a short time. The history goes back to before they met.

Yeah, I don't believe that he thought she was a robber. Apparently, he shot her 4 times. Sounds like he knew what he was doing.

I'm not buying self defense.

Even if it is self defense, it's not a good idea to blindly shoot people in the dark in your own house.

The more that comes out the worse it looks for Oscar.

I have no faith in the SAPS to properly handle this case but I can only hope with this being a high profile incident and garnering a lot of international attention they can at least appear competent.

That may be asking too much.

Beukes said there were no signs of forced entry to the home and said that police would oppose any application Pistorius might make to be released on bail.

Beukes said there had been reports about previous problems at Pistorius' home that were "allegations of a domestic nature." When a reporter asked if she meant domestic violence, she nodded and said yes.

"There are witnesses and we have interviewed them," she added. "We're talking about neighbors and people who heard things earlier in the evening and when the shooting took place."
