Doug Maclean on Ruff: The Least of Sabres' Problems

Doug Maclean was on with Howard Simon on GR-55 this morning.

http://audio.wgr550.com/a/70975703/2...in-buffalo.htm

Points of interest:

Ruff is the LEAST of the Sabres problems; if he is let go he will be picked up by someone else in 5 minutes

Ruff is one of the Top 5 coaches in the NHL

Ruff will enjoy huge pay day if he is let go and another team grabs him

Ruff is one of the best coaches to come down the pipe in a long time.

Maclean would fix a lot of things with the Sabres before he would fix Ruff

"Tuning out the coach" is not the case here; too much player turnover for that; does not buy the BS of tuning guys out

The Sabres are good enough to make the playoffs no doubt about that.

Myers will bounce back and be the big horse every championship team needs.

Ehrhoff has been a bit of a disappointment at his price; must take big-time step.

Miller has been average on a lot of nights; not currently Vezina Miller

Sabres need "go-to" guys who will grab team by shirt collar

Not convinced Vanek is that kind of "go-to" guy yet, though he loves him as a player

If the Sabre have a chance to get RoR, the Sabres should take a big time run at him

Based upon what exactly? It sure isn't on-ice performance of his hockey teams.

Nobody cares. NHL teams don't publish coaches salaries and even if they did nobody would care.

It's always interesting when people who obviously do not watch Sabres games try to comment on the team.

Wow, you can tell he hasn't watched many Sabres games this season.

They are probably decently good friends since they coached together for awhile, of course he is going to claim Lindy isn't the problem.

Ummm, people realize that Ruff was an assistant coach under MacLean, right?

Of course MacLean is going to have Lindy's back.

Yes, as was alluded to up-thread, the Ruff comments today contradict what Maclean said yesterday on another radio station, when he basically said "it is time for Ruff to go and it will benefit both parties" (Sabres and Ruff).

Yes, Ruff was an assistant in Florida under Maclean.

Yes, what is telling here is that a lot of Maclean's non-Ruff comments seem off-base to me.

I found it quite strange to call out Miller, Ehrhoff, and Vanek specifically as to why this team is having problems.

I would put forth none of those 3 guys are close to being a problem THIS YEAR and in fact, those would be the first 3 guys I would keep on this team rolling forward.

It suggests Maclean's comments on Ruff and the lack of "tuning out" may also be off base.

I think the only thing I agree with him is the last line about RoR, other than that it's just Lindy's friend praising him and a guy making conclusions about the team that has clearly not watched us very closely.

I don't disagree with anything here, and you can dismiss his comments as simply an old friend watching Ruff's back.

Having said that, his comments only substantiate the presumed conventional wisdom on Ruff around the NHL.

Maclean's thoughts here likely represent what Pegula is hearing from various sources.

Which doesn't help the Fire Ruff cause, does it?

I bring you:

http://pmd.fan590.com/podcasts/brady...b-13---7am.mp3

Starts near the beginning 1:30'ish mark. Refreshing to hear something from an outside, and not the WGR hosts. Includes Doug Maclean as well.

EDIT: Stops at 10 minute mark. Doug Maclean starts at 15:15

Doug Maclean from yesterday on The Fan:

"He's in tough and I hope he survives."
"The best thing that could probably happen to Lindy, is to get a chance to go somewhere else."
"When you're there that long, how many times can you reinvent yourself?"
"It's going to be challenging to turn that group around and they're just misfiring on too many cylinders to get it going."

Yes Doug, a coach who employs a passive defensive system with a virtually unstructured forecheck and no real puck-possession scheme is the least of the team's problems. Astute analysis.

So basically says it would be best for Lindy to be let go, and then comes to Buffalo radio and praises Lindy..seems like a coward to me.

He did a slight 180 today, didn't he?

Pure wild speculation on my part for fun, but it sounds like someone got to Maclean after his "FAN Radio" comments and said "what the heck are you doing?" and then asked him to back off yesterday's comments.

Yes. It was almost like night and day. The difference between yesterday on The Fan, and today on WGR. Haven't heard the WGR audio, but I'm guessing they didn't call him out on it.

Ok. Didn't know where you were going there. Sort of like Tim McCarver to a degree? "He wouldn't have made it to home plate if he didn't round third the way he did."

Somewhat like that, though I'm not familiar with Tim McCarver.
