I guess the problem is sitting Smyth who assumes he's in for Saturday's game.
He can come in for Potter, **** that guy is useless.

I think if you switch Petrell and Smyth, there's very little difference in the lineup.

This is a serious question by why haven't the Oilers as an organization gone out and hired a guy to teach the kids about faceoffs? How is it possible to be so terrible at faceoffs?

RNH looked lost in the FO circle at the World Jrs. Gagner seems to get worse on the dot every year. I really have no idea how these guys haven't improved but they need some sort of school or mentorship.

Times will look really bad when the PP scoring dries up too. Fact is these are the growing pains of a young team.

Aside from getting some better fitting vets I'm not sure what this team can really do but be patient and keep developing.
The Oiler kids? How about if the Oiler vets learn to put the puck in the ocean and play defense as well. Sitting Yakupov I'm not happy about but so be it. Sitting MPS is retarded.

Except Petrell gets loose pucks after the dump and doesn't take stupid penalties. At this point I sit Smyth until someone screws up.

Had no problem doing it with Whitney.

They were rotating players in practice today. As we stand no one knows what the lines are for this weekend and who is sitting. Jones was practicing in those lines but is out for a couple more weeks yet.

Edit:Jones a week maybe.
Dan Tencer ‏@dantencer
First day of contact practice for Ryan Jones...Krueger says he could return as early as a week from now.

Because the kids are the future of this team and have many flaws/kinks that need to be worked out. No doubt they need better vets but the kids still have many things to learn.

Surprised team's haven't made these mandatory yet. They're identical to any other pair of moisture wicking skate socks.

I believe they cost the consumer about 50-75 bucks a pop - pricey but worth the piece of mind.

Price shouldn't matter to a NHL team.

Probably could have helped prevent Erik Karlsson's Achilles laceration he suffered last night.

I too liked the lines that 'we' played against the Stars... I wouldn't mind seeing Belanger taking a few offensive zone draws so the scoring lines can gain control of the puck right from the face off - instead of having to gain entry into the zone after losing the face off and having the puck clear the zone.

Cycling usually means gaining and keeping control of the puck in the offensive zone... doesn't it?

You mean like Belanger?

2012-2013 39.5%
2011-2012 47.6%
2010-2011 43.8%
2009-2010 47.4%
2008-2009 42%
2007-2008 41.8%

Looks to me like he's been steadily improving on the dot actually. No idea what is going on this year though, I assume it's a bit of an anomaly and he'll bring the % up.

Tougher level of competition. Teams are actually throwing shutdown lines against the Hemsky line because they're the ones producing for us most of the time, and Gagner is getting tougher face-off matchups because of it.

We have Belanger but is he a teacher? Do the kids go out of their way to try learn like the kids of the past?

Not sure why after every practice we don't have all forwards spending 15-20 minutes working on draws.

The points on that graph would look similar to water usage graph during the superbowl game. Not sure what you consider a steady increase.

As for the Belanger comment yeah sure but clearly he isn't teaching the kids anything. Or else RNH and Gagner aren't smart enough to take notes.

I will be happy if they can score 3 real goals (no empty netter or shoot out freebies).

They say you have to learn how to walk before you can run, right now it looks like we need lessons on how to crawl.

Anyway, lucky enough that my friend scored tix to the game so for the first time in...maybe ever, I'll be at 2 consecutive games.

Looking for the same lineup but if Smyth is drawing in I guess it's Petrell or VV that will draw out. PRV and Harti both looked good against Dallas to me.

Haha, not sure I remember the whole story but here it goes. Back in the 80's when we relied on the Hockey News for information, there was a story about a beat writer who wrote one day that a certain player(can't remember who), that couldn't hit the net to save his life would probably miss the ocean too.

Now whether its urban legend or not, the story goes on to say the player was mad about the article and invited the writer to meet him on the pier and he would show him he could hit the ocean. The writer showed up and the player promptly shot a puck off a No Fishing sign...literally missed the ocean..

Might have some details wrong but I'm guessing that's what the reference is to.

I was close to that. Didn't get tickets to this Saturday but for next Tuesday again. Hard to believe that in a shortened season that going to games a week apart the team only plays one in between.

Wish Whitney would take benching the same way as Smyth.

Well, at least he'll be smart enough to keep himself unavailable to media on that day.
