Ottawa - Carolina

To Ottawa:

D Jamie McBain $1.7MM ( 13-14 $1.9MM 14-15 RFA)
F Andreas Nodl $845k (13-14 RFA)

To Carolina:

F Colin Greening $800k ( 13-14 $950k 14-15 UFA)
D Andre Benoit $ 650k (13-14 UFA)
F Shane Prince
3rd rd. '13, becomes '14 2nd if Ottawa makes playoffs this season.

Basis with of the trade is McBain for Greening+, extra pieces have been added to replace depth and even the value. Carolina has an in-house replacement in Sanguinetti, Ottawa could use PP help on the back end and someone to eat up some of Karlsson's minutes.

Greening is a big, fast versatile forward who can contribute in a variety of ways. He has struggled a bit offensively this year but can be a half a point per game type guy, a top 9 forward who can help out even when he's not scoring.

Our defense is in shambles, we can't afford to let one go. Especially to let Sanguinetti play.

Absolute yes from Ottawa. Don't see why the Canes would say yes, though,

McBain has been pretty good. Better defensively than I was expecting and chips in quite a bit offensively. Unfortunately, if we let him go, then Sanguinnetti is playing and that is a problem. You will see tonight, because Sangs has to be in due to Pitkanen injury and possibly Gleason injured as well.

Big thumbs down on this deal for me.

I might be willing to consider Nodl+McBain for a good proven defensive defenseman.

Something like McBain, Nodl, and 3rd for Phillips maybe? I know he's been with you guys for a long time, but that's the kind of guy we need, not a bunch of AHL tweeners with "potential".

What if I revise the original proposal to McBain, Nodl for Greening, Prince, '13 2nd? Carolina could then flip the 2nd rounder + a 5th to Anaheim for Toni Lydman.

Carolina In:

Lydman, Greening, Prince

Out:

McBain, Nodl, 5th.

Sens dont have a 2013 2nd and I wouldn't do that.

If someone like Chris Phillips is what you guys are looking for, I don't think we're a good match. The Senators need to add NHL defensemen, not subtract them...

That's leaving aside the fact that I'd be surprised if Phillips was moved at all, at the best of times.

Also, Greening hasn't been great this year, but I'm not so sure we should move him after a few mediocre games. He had a great year last year and is a great 3rd liner/2nd line tweener.

As do the Canes so I don't see a good match here.
