NYI @ NYR post game report

So I decided to build a python program allowing me to follow the Isles games by scoring each individual player on their good and bad plays that don't necessary show up on boxscores to get a good understanding of their performances. This is the first game I do this, so improvements will likely be added in the future games (probably a period breakdown and a breakdown of how many "minus plays" and "plus plays" each player gets instead of one overall final rating. Anyways, here is the scoring system broadly used to evaluate players but again, this isn't carved in stone and plays sometimes don't follow this exact pattern:

battle won: +1
battle lost: -1
hit leading to puck recovery: +1
hit leading to puck loss: -1
shot on goal: +1
goal: +2
play developing pass: +1
pass intercepted by opponent or giveaway: -1
takeaway or interception of opponent pass: +1
blocked or deflected shot: +1
unforced missed or blocked shot: -1
keeping puck in offensive zone: +1
losing puck leaving offensive zone: -1
offside: -1
minor penalty: -1
major penalty (not fighting): -2
fight when team trailing: +1
icing: -1
icing race won: +1
icing race lost: -1
succesful clear from defensive zone: +1
faceoff won: +1
faceoff lost: -1
zone entry with skating: +1
succesful deke of opponent: +1

AND HERE ARE THE RESULTS FOR THE GAME:

M.Martin 10
B.Strait 2
E.Boulton 1
J.Bailey 1
A.MacDonald 4
M.Moulson 2
K.Okposo 6
M.Grabner 10
C.Cizikas 6
F.Nielsen 10
C.McDonald 7
T.Hamonic 15
J.Tavares 27
J.Finley 2
M.Streit 10
B.Boyes 0
L.Visnovsky 10
K.Aucoin -1

It doesn't come as much of a surprise that Tavares dominated this game for us. Hamonic was also very solid tonight, especially in overtime. Grabner, Martin, Visnovsky, Nielsen and Streit all obtaining 10 points so solid games for them also.

as I said, this is the first time I do this, so I welcome any suggestions or comments you may have, as I will try to make this better and better every time!

GO ISLES GO!!

Four points seems high for MacDonald with the way he played tonight, at least early on.

What is an icing race lost? If my teammate ices the puck and I race after it to try to save it, but dont get to it, you deduct a point from me? I can understand if I am on defense and lose an icing race being given a -1. But offense? If anything, I expect winning one on offense to offset losing one on defense.

Interesting. But does Cizikas not get a +1 at least for his assist? Did I miss that? Because its strange how he got such a low score when I thought he played so well and McDonald beat him. I like it though.

Eric Boulton played 6 shifts and logged 1:37 of Ice time. he took 2 penalties and had 7 PIM. He gets a +1

I do not like this system

I was impressed with MacDonald. As bad a start as he had, he had a tough assignment and recovered well. As I said he was a shot blocking machine on the kill tonight (namely the 5-on-3 when the Isles trailed 2-1). That Kill alone changed momentum of the game. He did well 4 on 4 in OT as well.

A lesser player or younger player would have maybe hung his head a bit but AMac stayed with it and was very valuable tonight especially in the end. I'm not upset with him at all, he actually showed me something tonight.

Interesting.

I think it's a bit complex, unnecessarily.

If you limit it to
Smart play +1
Dumb play -1 (turnover, coverage lapse, poor pass)
Puck battle win/loss +1 -1

This would tell a pretty clear picture in most cases.

Gotta love the resiliency and effort on this team.

JT was the best player on the ice for both teams and not close. Though McDonough, Girardi, Staal are damn good and played him really tough. Moulson skated 2-3 shifts hard, more than in the past two years. Boyes is a pretty good offensive player, I think he is better than Parenteau, offensively, but worse defensively and not a good match with JT and MM without the puck. But he and MM were good tonight.

Can't believe the NYR stole Nash.

Grabner needs Nielsen - both are better together.

I'd keep Bailey Okposo together as well.

Cizikas is gonna be a real good player, real fast. I don't like the Ullstrom scratch for Boulton but if Cappy can spread the energy guys around the lineup it would greatly help the balance of the lines.
Like Cizikas, Ullstrom, Martin.

I think Aucoin might be done, he's been invisible the last half dozen games. McDonald playing better than his talent level suggests. Interested to see JJ at some point.

Finley was excellent, would like to see him in the lineup.

Visnovsky is really good too. Having Strait, Visnovsky and Finley help an overworked AMac and Hamonic will greatly help this team.

Liked KO's game tonight ! And Streit.

Love beating the Rangers!

Staple just tweeted that several Isles stated that Dougie Weight ripped into them after the 1st period....thank you for finally someone doing it.

Just promote the man already!

Finley had probably his best game as an Islander. He played well tonight.

This is how I'd love to see the lines on Saturday:

Moulson-Tavares-Boyes
Grabner-Nielsen-Ullstrom
Martin-Cizikas-McDonald
Bailey-Aucoin/Reasoner-Okposo

And yes, in that order.

Was at work and didn't get to really watch the game. How did Bailey play tonight? I thought he played really good the last 2 games and was interested in seeing how he'd do in this one with different linemates.

He didn't do that good imo tonight. Made a couple of turnovers trying to a force a pass. He was more effective in the other 2 games.

Casey Cizikas makes everyone he plays with better. Thats why he should center a third line of Bailey and Okposo... they need him the most.

We have a Hockey Fights Board. Someone usually is pretty quick with videos.

gritty effort tonight. Good to see them fight back. They played hard after making two early mistakes. JT is a beast.

You lose an icing race for example if you have a starting lead over the opposing player and he eventually catches up to you in order to touch the puck first. However, the player icing the puck always gets a -1 if it does end up being an icing as you can see in the scoring system. Some situations, as I explained, still do not necessarily follow the exact system. For example I wouldn't subtract a point if a player is completely out of energy and at the end of his shift if he doesn't catch up to a bad icing play his teammate makes..

The reason why I do not necessarily give points for assists is precisely the reason why I started this concept. I think too much importance is given to the players that do well on the score sheet. A player can make a very regular and normal pass which eventually leads to a goal (and an assist for him) but didn't really have anything to do with the goal... However, a good pass leading to a breakout play will provide a player with a point (regardless of whether that play ends up causing a goal or not) and this is how I think it makes more sense. Reward players for good plays regardless of the final outcome. As for Cizikas and McDonald, I actually think the final scoring came out quite accurate because we will all agree they both had good games, what made McDonald come out one point ahead in the end is the fact that Cizikas lost a lot of points on the faceoffs, which he lost most of them. Therefore, excluding the faceoffs (which we tend to forget about, but are still important) Cizikas would definitely have more points than McDonald (as we all agree would make sense).
