What's that old saying? "Be careful for what you wish for"
Let's say we do a massive tank, draft McKinnon. Who is to say the kid wouldn't crumble under all of the pressure playing in Toronto? Why couldn't he turn into another Alexandre Daigle or Patrik Stefan?
The point I am trying to make is that even a top 5 pick does not guarantee that we will get that elite player that we want. Also, given the Leafs 1st round draft history, I don't know if I would want to put too much faith in the Leafs picking the next franchise player through the draft.
Even when the Leafs won some games, they were getting horribly outshot. A couple of cases, it was a ratio of 2:1 or very close to it. They don't have enough offense (two kids are leading this team for crying out loud) and after some injuries, they still cannot find the depth. Never heard of some of their new guys, McClement, who? Where are they getting these guys? These are stone-hand, 4th line NHLers (read: AHLers) and these guys are not going to be the nucleus of this team.
Rebuilding is not a bad idea at this point and they do have a few bluechip prospects that are earning their job so far in Kadri and Frattin. But, their veterans, MacArthur, Grabovski, Kulemin, et al. have looked average most nights. Kessel took forever to score and Bozak is not a 1st line center. This team has a LONG way to go and to try to build around what they have now is a bit more than laughable.
