What's the deal with injury clause? Does he have to come off IR before the end of the season and play a game to be BO eligible or just pass a physical saying he's healthy?
Well, you can technically buy an injured player out, but they have the right to have the PA file a grievance on their behalf and have the process torpedoed.
There are some older players that will accept one for the good of the team or simply retire, but Leino isn't even 30 years old and his combination of reoccurring injuries and relative uselessness would likely prevent him from landing another job in the league, so he has reason to fight any buyout.
Just watched... Both Ruff and Kaleta speak as if Pat will be a healthy scratch.
Ruff: "Pat's cleared to go, so he's an option"
PK: something to the effect of "they will put me in when they think I'm a good option to help the team win, and if not, I will continue to be positive and help by watching them play" or something of the sort.
Has there been any news lately about how Girgs is doing?
I read in the D&C not too long ago that they were targeting Feb 12 at Lake Erie or Feb 15 vs Houston. He had just resumed skating (red jersey, no-contact) at the time, but it sounds like he's ready now, though he still may need that final medical clearance.

#Amerks LW Zemgus Girgensons watching #Sabres vs. Canadiens. He says he's ready to play but must wait. Next game isn't until Tuesday at LEM.
I question the Sabres medical staff. If Leino has had hip problems for years he probably should have had surgery last spring.
Honestly it seems like the medical staff of every NHL organization is terrible and constantly screwing up. The fact that the Penguins couldn't properly evaluate their captain, their best player, best player in the league, and biggest asset the league has had in over a decade is laughable. Seems like quite a few teams have had questionable calls over the past 20 years or so.
While it's Strickland, who is hit or miss at best, it mirrors what Tim Panotch (Flyers beat writer) said prior to the first game of the season vs. the Flyers and what the Sabres have finally started to admit.
Kevin Oklobzija @kevinoDandC - If lines in #Amerk practice tell a story, then no RW Evan Rankin (bone bruise/ankle) or LW Zemgus Girgensons (concussion) won't play Friday.
Kevin Oklobzija @kevinoDandC - Don't expect RW Evan Rankin (bone bruise/ankle) in #Amerks lineup anytime soon. Suffered a setback when he practiced Mon., per Ron Rolston.
John Kozera @Kozyshank - @kevinoDandC - is Girgensons dealing with symptoms or are they making certain he's 100%.
Kevin Oklobzija @kevinoDandC - @Kozyshank - He has said he's fine.
Kevin Oklobzija @kevinoDandC - Also, #Amerks coach Ron Rolston said LW Zemgus Girgensons (concussion) should be back in the lineup "within a week or so."
Jason B @jasonn27 - @kevinoDandC - my guess is "or so" has about 3 weeks wiggle room. Guy is never accurate about players returning.
Kevin Oklobzija Kevin Oklobzija @kevinoDandC - @jasonn27 It's a concussion. No 2 brains heal the same. Impossible for anyone to provide precise timeframe. He politely provided an answer.
Jason B @jasonn27 - @kevinoDandC - thought his symptoms were fine and it was about getting back in shape? I thought you wrote that at least.
Kevin Oklobzija @kevinoDandC - @jasonn27 - Z says he does feel fine. Doesn't mean a neurologist doesn't see reason for caution.
LaxSabre - So Girgensons is fine to skate but needs to be cleared for game action. (Hasn't he only been skating for just over a week now? usually you have to be skating up to 7 to 10 days for you to get the chance to be cleared for game action) I think we will see him at the earliest would be Wednesdays home game vs Texas.
