i could see a desperate team throwing 6millino at him. FA pool is really weak. wonder if the devils would match.

He will get a payday and even though i don't doubt his loyalty to the devils, i don't doubt that he's a smart guy either.

Clarkson knows, with his play and career, that there may not be another payday like the one that is coming to him. He has really performed the last couple seasons and in this market is going to get his due.

I can't imagine he won't allow the devils to match, but if it's a signficance difference in offers, Clarkson will take the money.

Obviously my opinion, but i don't think he'll be giving a big hometown discount.

Keep in mind his new production has happened ever since De Boer became his NHL coach. He was awful in 2010-2011.

I think it's 50/50 he stays or leaves. If he leaves, It'll be to the Leafs.

All I know is he has a very good relationship with Lou Lamoriello and PDB. It will help in reupping him. I definitely see him staying here.

i think he's gonna test free agency and get a big contact somewhere.... that will end up being a really bad contact for whoever signs him

and if devils give him a big payday, then i feel like they will regret it later on down the road

Interesting scenario, he'll almost certainly get more on the open market than what NJ will offer him... but even with that being said I see him taking a discount to stay in Jersey.

All the 28 other teams shouldn't waste their time. It's either NJ or TOR indeed. NJ's going to give him a very nice offer and TOR an insane one.

If he goes to free agency, I think it's safe to say Carlyle will be begging Nonis to sign him. Clarkson is the type of player Carlyle loves.

David Clarkson's next contract

As a Devil fan, I'm frightened to think about Clarkson's next deal. I know its extremely early, but what will he command on the open market?

4.5? No way, I can see him getting Grabovski type money, 5.5 seems like a good amount. You don't have many players like that, could even see some stupid team throw 6 at him if he racks up the goals more consistently.

Rangers will sign him to a ridiculous contract, then he will be traded to Montreal, bought out and sign with San Jose...wait... why does this sound so familiar?

I would be shocked if he left to be honest.

He'll be re-signed shortly after the Devils season is over. $30m 6years, something like that.

Hope/think anyways.

A huge factor in this situation is DeBoer. Clarkson credits him for giving him an opportunity in juniors when no one else would. He also credits Lou for doing the same at a professional level. With DeBoer in NJ, he has now had the 2 most productive seasons of his career by far.

I would truly be stunned if he left.

Deboer had to convince Clarkson to not quit playing hockey when he was his coach in Kitchner

Clarkson is in the best situation for him to succeed. He's been the beneficiary of the Devils giving him a shot to make something for himself and developing him. Clarkson is also playing for his old coach who has a system that he can thrive in, despite his limitations and he's also being given tons of ice time.

He might get a huge contract if he decided to go elsewhere and cash in but he'll never live up to it having to play in a new system and a new coach, but in the same boat if the Devils pay him anything north of 4 mil and more than say 3 years, it's a bad contract as well.

He'll get at least 5 million. The guy just makes the most with what he's got, but you can really see the evolution in his play. Playing with crazy confidence right now.
