As per Dreger:

Interesting. Leaves us with one center in Stajan. He had this stretch last year where he was doing a phenomenal job of being a pest. And then this year, that all of a sudden stopped. He did take the initiative and became pretty good at faceoffs (59.4% this year).

With another year on his contract though, I doubt he gets picked up. Perhaps this a precursor to another deal? Backlund and Baertschi aren't ready to be back yet.

Can we waive Comeau too?

I think the Islanders pick him up. Are they at the contract limit yet?

Interesting. I assume he's gone then. Wonder/hope this is part of something a bit bigger.

Same here. It doesn't make sense to let go of one our centers who actually wins faceoffs.

It's a good reminder of what happens when teams change coaches. Under Sutter, he got a lot of ice-time, used in lots of situations, even got his contract extension and was rarely (ever?) a healthy scratch. However, under Hartley, he's been much less crucial and a healthy scratch and now he's on waivers.

I wouldn't rule out Edmonton being moderately interested in Jones, as he could fit in on the 4th line and take some faceoffs and allow Chris VandeVelde to be returned to the AHL.

Oiler fan who wouldn't mind taking a flyer on him.
Especially if it forces Tambo to trade some of the less talented bottom six players Edmonton has.
Man do we ever hope Smyth retires...

Wouldn't mind the Avs picking him up for the 4C spot.

Surprised Feaster let him go, he loves his own draft picks.

NHL/AHL tweener. On a contending team he shouldn't be more than a 13th forward, unless he has taken huge steps since his time in Tampa.

It's a bit surprising. The Flames center situation, especially with Backlund out, is horrendous. They've had wingers playing center all over the place. Stajan is now the only healthy center on the team that played center last year and didn't start at wing this year. And even with real centers the Flames have been notorious for sucking at faceoffs for several years now. Not to mention the Flames are one, if not the, softest teams in the game today.

And yet, they trade a gritty, faceoff winning center.

Jones isn't going to make or break a season, but he's a serviceable 12th/13th forward. If you want to speculate this seems like a waived player they are hoping will get claimed, unlike a lot of the other Flames depth forwards who had no chance (Comeau, Jackman, Begin etc.). Could be trying to clear a contract to make a move.

Just hope it's not a deal for another stop gap to slightly improve the Flames, but have them ultimately miss the playoffs yet again.

No we are not, no need for him. If anything we need to drop a bottom 6 C not named Cizikas.

This better not be a move to sign Arnott.

He's been very good this year on draws.

He's an NHLer. I don't know why we're waiving him unless a trade is coming up. He'll definitely be claimed.

I highly doubt he will be.

Played 110 games in 6 years. That's not even 20 games a season, and has 5G and 10A. I don't care if he's running 80% in the faceoff circle. Unless he's there to be an enforcer, which he isn't, he doesn't appear to be a very useful NHL player at all.

He's going back to where he can have some success.

He's quite an effective 4th liner. He doesn't score a lot, obviously, but he's good defensively and annoying as hell.

Buffalo's been one of the poorest teams at faceoffs. Without Ott we'd be losing every draw every night. We need to consider Jones. I'd be more comfortable with him on the fourth line than Hecht at this point. We need someone who can win draws consistently besides Ott. He's cheap, why not take a chance? We wouldn't have to play Scott/McCormick every night either.

Well they can't take a chance without making a trade since the roster is full.

They only have two players they can freely move (Foligno and Hodgson, who are not worth dumping for a waiver pickup), waiver eligible Brennan, and timebomb that they already let explode on them Grigorenko (waiver exempt but has already burned an ELC year and once he's re-assigned, cannot be recalled).
Leave it to a dumbass like Regier to build a flawed team with little opportunity to improve.

Are the Flames keeping Steve Bégin because Hartley likes him or is he really useful?

I wouldn't mind it. Sign Arnott on the cheap, give him PP time to pump up his numbers some, and flip him for a pick at the deadline once we're out of it.

They had five games to make a responsible decision and didn't, so they're now basically stuck with him and even if they re-assign him, they've wasted an ELC year.
In addition to potentially hurting the player and wasting a cheap year, it also leaves little to no room for internal competition.
