Shanahan doesn't have to score 40 goals this year to help the Rangers.

Its a 1 year deal. Its not like they were going to use that extra cap space on anything better.

It's not like we signed Shanahan to a three year deal like we would've done in the past. Signed him to a one year deal. He'll add leadership, he'll add some scoring and while he might not be the greatest power foward around, he'll still an improvement from the Rangers POV. This gives some guys down at Hartford another year to develop and if there's someone that shows they belong with the big club, they'll see the ice time. It's a good move as the Rangers do have room under the cap.

Atlantic Division 2005-06: 1,240 goals for
Central Division 2005-06: 1,195 goals for

Atlantic Division 2005-06: 1,305 goals against
Central Division 2005-06: 1,292 goals against

What exactly does the division have to do with it?

Shanahan brings a lot more to the table than just goals.. he is a terrific leader, he would be great to mentor the youth in the Rangers organization... he provides toughness too.. i know us Detroit fans are all calling him washed up, but Shanny would always stick up for a teamate, and even if he doesn't fight much any more he is still damn tough...
I'll never forget all that he brought to the Wings when he came in the 96-97 season, and if he can even bring a fraction of that emotion, leadership, size and irish toughness to the Rangers, than NY fans you will be pretty happy and he will be worth the 4 M... plus its only for a year so you have an out if it doesn't work out...
but I'm sure it will you guys are getting a player that I will miss hugely on our team next year... Wings fans tended to want him out, but now that he is gone it feels like the team is falling apart, I'd say that even at his age he can play a vital role on any team

I'll admit...that is a pretty damn horrible job.

I thought it was self explanatory...

Detroit walks all over the Central Division, no way would Detroit have their regular season point totals if they were in the Atlantic Division... no way will Shanahan produce the numbers he put up in the Central Division last year in the Atlantic Division this year with the Rangers.

He will have 20-25 goal season max, he will not be a physical presence, environment is everything. 4 million is too much, you can get leadership and 20 goals for half that price.
