Lol when i see people talking about Gorges point total, it only shows he doesnt what Gorges brings to a team so I wont take the time to argue wit you. Ypu think Gorges is getting paid 4M for his 10 pts per year?
Anyways, next.
There are plenty of players that don't get paid to get points, but they don't make 4 million.
So I guess the point total only matters when its a player a fan likes, gotcha. I could argue a lot of overpaid players bring certain intangibles to a team, no problem.
Lol yeah keep it going. Point total is everything. Gorges got 4m$ for his point total.
He's overpaid and I'm fine with it.If there's a player that I like as far as personality goes it's Gorges.Good for him.Remember when he was traded to us? Healthy scratch , nobody was ready to give him a shot.He exceeded every expectations.
Yes, point taken, dumb comment. I know he's not a PP guy but I guess what I was trying to say is that he is not good offensively. At all.
Which is OK for a #4 Dman, but he has to be one of the best paid #4 D in the league? So what else does he offer besides blocking shots? He does not add toughness, he can't fight, he's not necessarily a crease clearer, and he can't provide offense. So why is his value to the Habs so high? Is a comparable to him Jason Smith or Adam Foote?
I honestly don't know, I know that he is highly regarded around here but I don't know why. I don't know the game (outside of the goaltending position) that well, so there are nuances that I don't pick up.
Gorges can eat a lot of minutes. That's invaluable. He's a shut down defenseman who plays smart, efficient, positional hockey, and he can also move the puck. That's rare, in fact. His shot blocking is secondary, or even tertiary, to all of the above.
Toss Gorges into virtually any system and he works. He's an efficient positional player and a decent enough skater with enough puck moving skills to play well in a transition game system, while being smart enough and strong enough defensively to excel in a defensive system.
Players like him are very solid. He's not a force out there, like Adam Foote was, and he's not as good as Foote was in his prime, but he's an efficient, smart player who doesn't sacrifice puck skills for his shut down abilities.
I think a guy like Willie Mitchell is somewhat comparable. Mitchell's an underrated skater and passer. He's bigger, but I'd say Gorges plays a safer game. Scuderi doesn't have the passing to match Gorges.
I don't see him as overpaid, nor do I view him as a #4. He can safely handle 22 minutes a night.
He's getting exactly market value. If Gorges somehow became an UFA tomorrow, some team somewhere would pony up roughly $4 million a year for his services. If you're a tried, tested and true Top 4 D under the age of 30, $4 million is basically the bare minimum you're getting on the open market. But that's all Gorges would get because he doesn't bring significant offense or punishing bodychecks.
For what he brings the team, I think he's worth his cap hit. His cap hit is also low enough that if we ever want to trade him, he will have significant positive trade value.
The point is u find decent d man without spending like a drunk
u think the leafs wiill keep Dion at 6 mil when kostca overall is better and cheaper
we overate players big time , I like JJ but folks when these types make 4 mil salaries r out of whack big time
this is the only league that pays way to much to the average player all factors considered
This is an erroneous statement...MANY players throughout ALL sports are overpaid. To say otherwise means you probably only follow the NHL.
What a ridiculous statement.
Anyways...like I said in the other post. I'm not really hung up about how much the teams I cheer for spend on salaries, it's their money and they are in charge of building a team with the money they're allowed to spend.
I just want to see results on the ice...and just because a player is underpaid doesn't mean he'll play better
Fans tend to overstate the correlation between salary and performance
Brian Campbell is overpaid, but he still turned in a solid season for the Panthers last year...funny how him being overpaid got lost in the shuffle last year as opposed to the year prior when he was a 5/6 dman for the Blackhawks.
He is a little bigger than Sweeny, but he rarely makes a mistake, is always in position, and is capable of changing the momentum with a play or with his "character" plays.
In my opinion he's our captain so no he's not overpaid, this guy is all heart and I don't mind paying a little bit more for that.
I agree with this whole heartedly. We dont really know how he is behind the cameras. He obviously is respected, liked and a major figure in the locker room. He was asked and willingly took Gally in as a room mate and seems to be doing a good job on that. he is the leagues best shot blocker and puts his team first. Some things cant be put on a stat sheet, and to me players like that is what you win with..... Period
