Gunnarson maybe worth a late 1st, but to a playoff contending team that is desperate for D, and with what the Oilers have in the system, they would be crazy to even think of doing this trade.
So if Edmonton is picking 14th, you'd trade it for Jake Gardiner?
The only way Jake Gardiner is traded straight up for a first round pick is if it's top 5.
Overreacting a little? Yes, Jake Gardiner has a good rookie campaign. ... So now he's top 5 pick or bust? What is Karlsson worth, the entire first round? Schultz? Lots of guys have good rookie campaigns, hold on to him and cherish him and hope the shiny bauble keeps on shining.

Jake Gardiner has shown that he has the ability to be a dominant player in the NHL. His skating and vision are very impressive.
That's the kind of player you'd expect to find in the top five of a draft. So yes, the only way Gardiner is traded straight up for a draft pick is if it is top five.

No he hasn't. The potential is there but so far he has not proven much

Thats true. The Oilers have alot of really good young pieces coming into the fold and because of that wouldn't need to make this trade but their NHL group of defensemen is pretty bad.
He has been seasoned and is not an 18 yr old with all kinds of potential who may or may not realize it..
People here value picks more than established players...
How many picks have not panned out in the past?? Loads..
Gardner is a sure thing a top 5 pick is awesome but there is a chance he does not pan out and the big chance he does not become as valuable as Gardner is today
Plus how many years before he makes your team??? 1 maybe 2..Gardner plays both of those years and dramatically improves the team he is on
We should all just acknowledge that Gaustad got a first, so now every player ever will be worth at least a first forevermore. I like Poile, but that was the day logic died.

You also have to consider that Carl plays a position that is largely in demand across the league. And he also happens to play that position very well and can log huge, responsible minutes if required.
Those kinds of players aren't easily to obtain and his return in a trade will reflect that.

Gardiner looked like he could become a premier D last year.
But to call an AHL player premier when so many other D Guys in his draft class are truly premier is a joke.

He's playing in the AHL because of his concussion. He's not there because of a lack of abilities and he's probably the best defencemen in the AHL at the moment.
You're kidding right? Our most reliable and consistent defenceman over the last 2-3 seasons is worth a mid-second max? I think you may be overrating draft picks a little bit. The best player that you can possibly hope to draft in a mid second would only hope to become a Gunnarson.
If he's so valuable and reliable then why is he in like every trade proposal from leaf fans lol

I realize he is in the AHL because of that. But presumably if he is healthy enough to play full speed in the AHL and take hits in the AHL he would be healthy enough to do that in the NHL. A couple of games on a conditioning stint makes sense.... But when will Leafs fans start getting a lot
E concerned not seeing their premier/elite/future Norris trophy winner not playing in the bigs?

Jake Gardiner still feels his game isn't up to speed, both mentally and physically. You can feel free to look up the various news pieces that have discussed it for yourself though.
No cause for concern, IMO. Before his concussion, he was flying all over the ice in the AHL. He looked much better than he was last year.

That seems to be the sentiment of most Leafs fans. I have admittedly not seen any of Gardiners Marlies games sand should probably just shut my uninformed mouth. I would just be a little concerned if I was a Leafs fan....that is all.

Because we have too many defensemen already, and guys coming back from injury soon. Somebody HAS to be traded.
Gunnarson probably has the most value after Phaneuf and Gardiner (who are not being traded), and we have done well while he has been injured, with other defensive guys stepping up.
