Granted it's only one game, but nonetheless it's amazing to me how far my enthusiasm has dropped for our defensive prospect pool this season. We went from Dumoulin, Murphy, Alt, Biega, Lowe, Levi, and others as being STRONG prospects for our future.... Dumo gets traded, Murphy has a poor season, poor WJC, and doesn't make the team this year, Alt gets traded, Levi gets sent back to Plymouth for his overage season, Biega hasn't scored a goal all season after double digit campaigns the two previous years.... it's just all bad news back there. I suppose it's karma for Justin Faulk working out for us, but damn.... we went from loaded back there to it being a position of weakness in a hurry.

Lowe is having an encouraging season for the Oil Kings and Carrick is doing well.... but that's about it. Even a newly drafted guy in Jacobb Slavin is having an awful year in the USHL of all places.

Hey guys, could you give me some info on Brian Dumoulin and Ryan Murphy?

Have both of them in my keeper league and I'm trying to lose a few prospects. How good of a chance do they stand to make the NHL from now and the 2014/15 season?

I'm not a prospect guru, but I'll try to give you a little help. Murphy has been sent back to Kitchener. I'd expect him to stay there the full season unless all of our RH defenseman get injured. The earliest I'd bet on him playing is next season. Probably a PP only role. Very sheltered minutes at ES. However, the Canes might think it's better to acclimate him to the pro game in the AHL. 2014/2015 I would think it should be a lock for him to make the roster.

For Dumoulin, I'd guess he's one of the first call-ups for Pittsburgh. I'd expect him to come in as a #6, and work his way up the lines. MAYBE by 2014/2015 he could be a #3/4. I generally see that as his upside.

Now, there playing styles are miles apart as I'm sure you know. Murphy the point producer and Dumoulin the defensive minded guy who can chip in offensively sometimes.

For those of us not as familiar with the league, what are the implications of this? Is this a positive development?

Yeah I would say it is. Allsvenskan is the 2nd tier league there, so if he's getting ice time there that's a good indication that he's progressing nicely.

Weird timing. The year after drafting him in my current EHM game he signed with Karlskrona.

* - Ellis is on contract with Charlotte, not Hurricanes property and by no means a prospect.
Since the last update, Brock McGinn has been on a bit of a tear in the OHL, Keegan Lowe said "ima score lots of goals", and the new elite forward known as Luke Pither has been acquired in trade for a meager price of Mark Alt and Brian Boucher, who was no longer needed because Dan Ellis no longer has problems.

Any update of Rask? I assume he's injured as he hasn't played a game lately.

I read the Calgary Sun on an almost daily basis and they seem to love him. Haven't seen anything worthwhile in a bit tho. I'll keep checking.

15 points in the last 15 games is nothing to sneeze at, regardless of being an old 19.

I haven't heard anything about an injury, though. I think he's been playing pretty consistently in Calgary, though I may be wrong.

Karlsson might get in another game for Frolunda in the SEL on Tuesday due to injury problems.

Ryan Murphy looks to be out to prove his naysayers wrong. 16 points and +12 in 14GP since the WJC.

Could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Murphy picked his game up around January last year also. I'm pretty sure he's a very late starter.

He went on a tear after getting snubbed from the WJC team last year, I definitely remember that.

These kind of numbers, you think Murphy will get a look next year or will they wait another year for development?

He'll be pro next year, I'm just hoping it's in the AHL to get some seasoning and to learn to play defense in the pro speed/size game there rather then in the NHL as a #6.

Hope the defense looks something like this next year:
Pitkanen
Faulk
Gleason
Harrison
McBain
Jordan
Corvo (if he keeps this up and we bring him back on another one-year deal)

Sangs, sorry man but I think you're looking more and more like a career AHLer at this point.

So a friend asked me today what Mike Murphy is up to and I honestly couldn't tell him. He hasn't played professionally since being cut from his khl team. Has anyone heard anything?

That's an awful long time to go without playing at a time when you're supposed to be playing a lot to develop. Could it be he's called it quits?

Our 2012 class sure is looking strange to this point. Phil Di Giuseppe started really slow for Michigan in his sophomore season and is likely to statistically replicate his Freshman year. 23 points in 32 games but only 8 goals. Brock McGinn has been a positive surprise with 47 points in 59 games with 24 goals after only scoring 18 points in 33 games his draft season.

Daniel Altshuller has posted some strong numbers in net, but it's hard to say how strong he has played without having seen him obviously. Colin Olsen started the year out REALLY well for Ohio State but tumbled late in the season. Slavin has been bad at the USHL level... which is concerning to say the least considering where he should be for a pick that high. Erik Karlsson has been strong in Sweden by all accounts. Nothing else really to report it seems.
