This obviously changed nothing.......

This is quite OT but I feel like if there was a moment when G earned his C. It was that shift.

Back on topic. I think players like Rinaldo are a necessity. His offense i'd be happy for maybe 10 points out of the guy and solid defensive play. If he's sound defensively and can grind it out and drop the gloves when needed he's a good guy to have on the roster.
Any offense out of him is a bonus. Also no matter how many Flyers fans complain that he has a chip on his shoulder and he's a liability. When you play the kind of Hockey the Flyers do you NEED a guy like this. We need someone to throw punches on occasion because the Flyers have and always will play very physical hockey, and with that comes a certain level of problems.

1. Drew two penalties tonight.

2. Got underneath Jets fans (check main board), and, more importantly, got under the skin of the Jets players.

3. I like Rinaldo. That is all.

Unfortunately b/c the refs don't some Flyers fans don't either..but I'm not one of them. I'm a Rinaldo backer. He had a nice agitating game last night...

Was listening to NHL network on Sirius/XM and Phil Esposito said he really likes Rinaldo and said that if you put him with some talent he would produce some offense as well. We saw glimpses of that last year but I'm fine with his checking and agitating role. In the future maybe he'll be more like a Talbot....or at least 2011-2012 Talbot...

Rinaldo will never give you a lot of offensive output

Guess it depends on your definition of "a lot" ...plus learned long ago to avoid absolute statements. The Richards and Carter trades should have taught some people that as well

Rinaldo is a good guy.

Gets a lot of unwarranted hate.

But he caused so much butthurt on the main boards

In general, but a thread was created after last night.
Thread link.
Main boards continues to be main boards. They get their panties in a bunch if you say... well anything really.

Other teams fans don't like Rinaldo because he skates hard and their players have a possibility of getting a good bone crunching hit put on them. There's nothing they can do about it and it pisses them off. I don't blame them. The same way I dislike Kaleta, I'm sure other fans feel the same way about Rinaldo. That's the role of an agitator.

Yeap he is the type of player who you absolutely hate when he is on a different team, but when he is on your team you love him. These are guys like Rinaldo, Talbot (though not so much anymore), Carcillo, Sean Avery (before he started to suck), Matt Cooke, etc.

That penalty last night was dumb, and it cost him a lot of playing time after. He can be very effective as a fourth line agitator and checker, but he's got to control the stupid if he wants to get consistent ice time.

Sestito and Shelley are wastes of spaces. If Rinaldo could control the stupid, he can be a valuable player, IMO.

Certainly. He may never be anything more than a fourth liner, but he's the type of player than can excel in that role.

Shelley is great. He's an up-and-coming power forward

12 top 6 forwards doesn't work. You need the agitator line, you just need them to have hockey skills too.

It was a pretty dumb penalty and I like that he saw limited ice time for it but I would have preferred if Lavy just sat him a few shifts then have him take a seat for what seemed like an entire period. The team needed energy yesterday and you can always count on Rinaldo to provide some one way or the other. If only Laviolette would sit some other player for a couple shifts and hold them responsible for dumb penalties. He seems to have a double standard.

Which the team could easily do.

That comes with the territory of being a fringe player though. If you don't have the talent to be a premiere player on the team, then you better not be taking bad penalties. It sucks for guys like Rinaldo, but that's just the way it is at any competitive level.

Why exactly does it not work, and which team failed with such an approach?

Because top 6 forwards get paid like it, and you would have like 10M to put together a defense?

Oh, I thought you were talking about it in principle in that it wouldn't work even if you were able piece together such a team within the salary cap.

Rinaldo hasn't proven himself full yet IMO. He still takes too many unneeded penalties. At times he's on his game and looking good, but half the time he is running around doing nothing productive
