Malone to the Pens

With Malone's injury history in latter years, age and cap-hit, I am thinking that Tampa will be looking to offload him no later than the off-season when the cap drops.

For the Pens he would be an excellent fit (now) if Tampa can retain 1 million of his cap-hit or so. We need the kind of abilities he brings, and he would be a great presence for our room. Probably also easy to sell him on returning to the Burgh.

Tampa would have a hell of a lot of money tied up in their top6 with him next season, and with Conacher added and Panik likely to be ready, Malone is the obvious odd man out.

What can the Pens offer the Lightning to make this work?

At first it's questionable if Malone will be traded, but he is worth a lot more than Kennedy and a 3rd. We have enough guys in the AHL/as rookies n the NHL that can play at a pace like Kennedy.

What about Olli Maata straight up? You have a lot of quality D prospects and you get a great experienced Powerforward, while we get a great prospect, but we also get the uncertainty, if he will pan out.

-> Only thing I would trade Malone for are: a first, a top-4 D under 30 (would be willing to add something), or a great D prospect.

In the give to get spirit, I'd sacrifice Maatta. But Tampa needs to retain some of the cap-hit.

Yes please...i feel Malone is more of a need than a want. I admit it may be completely from a nostalgic view though.

Think that'd be a good deal for both.

This or Maatta for Malone, straight up, like another poster suggested I would be fine with.

His NMC expires July 1st and we have a ton of forwards coming up or that are already here who can do his job at a lower caphit. I would be pretty surprised if he's not moved this summer or maybe even before. I would love either deal proposed.

Yep. I think Malone still has a bunch of good play left in him, but he could use a change and Pittsburgh would be a place he would waive his NMC for.

Why would Pittsburgh take on that contract? 4.5 on the cap for two more years after this?

The reason why Pittsburgh let him walk in the first place was because he wanted too much money and too much term. I don't see it as a very savvy decision from the Pens perspective, especially with the cap going down next year, and guys like Letang, Sutter and probably Despres requiring raises after next season, not to mention Malkin's new deal.

That contract doesn't give them much wiggle room unless they planned on using an amnesty him, or trading him in the offseason to a floor team who would be attracted to the 4.5 cap hit but only 2.5 salary.

We have no need for Kennedy and already have 8 D on our roster, Niskanen is good but makes too much to be our 6th D. I can see Malone for a D prospect though.

Pass on the Niskanen+Kennedy deal, especially if we have to retain salary.

Niskanen is just a fringe 5/6. Kennedy is small, we need size. With St.Louis, Conacher, and Tyler Johnson soon, we'll be an incredibly small team.

Still open to dealing Malone away if the right deal comes along.

ORLY?

Niskanen was so good on the bottom pairing last year that we were able to deal Michalek and put him in the top 4 with Letang. He's looked even better this year in that role.

Lightning fans should go to sleep every night praying for a defenseman as steady as Niskanen to insert into the line-up. I wouldn't deal him for Malone straight-up.

His skill set is that of a 5/6, not very gifted offensively nor imposing physically. I actually wasn't trying to knock Niskanen and should have picked my words better. He doesn't have the tools of our top 4, he's a bottom pairing guy, but a good one whom I'd gladly take. Just not in this deal.

You can phrase it however you like, he's playing 20 minutes a night in a top 4 role on the top team in the conference (top 10 in GA/G in the league) and thriving. He has not been anything close to a "fringe 5/6" since '10-'11.

The "tools" of Tampa's top 4 have not been yielding terribly impressive results.

I'm glad you wouldn't take him in this deal, because I certainly wouldn't offer him.

If say $1M of Malone's salary was retained by TB, I would part with Maatta and maybe add like a 3rd or something.
