I think there will be spots reserved for players based on how they play during the season.

they will likely save 3 forwards, 2 Dmen, and a goalie

Galchenyuk is a near certainty of making the roster based on play so far.

NBC announcers tonight were already talking about the Olympics and who will make the team. Pierre McGuire and Eddie Olcyk said they both would have Oshie on theirs for what it's worth.

Yah but I take that with a grain of salt. Nothing against them but I think the way to look at is that when the Rangers player, they say oh McDonagh and Callahan are locks or when the Avs play EJ will be a lock, or Nucks with Booth and Kesler and so on and so on until you have a 45 man roster.

That said I would have Oshie on my team. I'd like to see what he can do on the larger surface

If Canada brings Nash, we're bringing Oshie.

Most spots will be open. I'm sure they'll use the same method as in 2010 when the GM panel ranked the players at intervals and then they chose the team based on the aggregate rankings of each GM for all intervals. That's how JJ was able to get on the team as he kept climbing at each interval.

In no fashion can Glachenyuk be considered a near certainty so far. That's way off base. He's looked pretty good as an 18 year old but 7 points in 12 games playing 12 min/gm doesn't make one a near certainty. He's extremely talented and he'll be a fixture for Team USA in the next two decades but he has to do a lot more to be in discussion for this team.

What? He's going to have a perform at a high enough level to score consistently otherwise he isn't even considered. That level is near a prorated value of close to 30 goal scorer and 70 points or higher. It may sound arbitrary in terms of value however there's no way you can make him a certainty. We have plenty of 30 goal scorers and a couple of forty goalers or close to that.

What we need is an elite first line center and we don't have it. That's what Gally would have to be. We have responsible centers and scoring wingers. We don't need a sophmore player who may or may not be able to produce in an Olympic tournament. This is going to be our best team in a long team with one real shortcoming. I'm not going to risk on an unproven player. He's 19 and coming off a nice WJC and looks to be a solid NHL prospect. Let's give him some time before we want to consider him for our national team.

The one thing that will convince me otherwise?

As previously stated:
He becomes a legit first line center
and/or
MTL makes the playoffs and he goes off like rocket.

If Ryan plays center I think that minimizes the need for a guy like Galchenyuk at this point.

This is pretty haggard if you ask me.
No chance does Stepan or Dubinsky make it over Callahan. I don't think either would make it over JT Miller or Kreider by this time next year.

Overall this is a very nice roster for the orientation camp.

I understand they haven't been lighting up the scoresheet yet, but any chance players like Cam Atkinson, Kyle Palmieri, Brandon Saad, Jordan Schroeder etc... get an invite to this camp.

I see others getting an invite:

Folignio (Columbus)
Kreider (rangers)

remmember their roster is of 23 players so it doesnt mean they play in a game.

Like the list, I think Schneider gets the invite over Howard. I don't think Anderson will sustain this pace but if he does, he should get the third invite. Sounds like everyone has closed the book on Thomas. What if he plays in the Worlds and then plays lights-out for the first part of 2013-2014? Might be hard to leave him off.

On D, I want to include Paul Martin in the list in invitees but I don't see who they leave off. It's a solid list and I'm glad I don't have to be the one to pick the final 7. Our D-corps will be very good for years to come.

On offense, I'd leave off Gionta and invite Okposo. I don't think either would make the final roster but they didn't think enough of Gionta to invite him to Orientation Camp last time, and now he's 4 years older. Okposo isn't good enough to make the team but he always answers the call to play in the Worlds and it might be nice to reward him for that with an invite to Camp.

really happy with the way Colin Wilson has been playing of late. that kid could be that big bodied center that we have been lacking for years. if he continues to improve every night the way he has, I am not sure he doesnt make this team. I have watched the past 6-7 Preds games, and he has been their best forward by a lot...might not be saying much as they arent loaded upfront, but the kid is turning into a top 10 scorer for USA players.

I get to watch Saad play every night and I have to say that eventhough his numbers arent through the roof, he has been the Hawks best and hardest working forward probably half of the games this year already. the amount of chances and power plays that he creates with his hard skating is amazing. if he can start getting more rewarded on the stat sheet I will say he is a serious name to consider next year as his type of game (power and speed) would bring another dimension to this squad.

he has impressed the hell out of me so far and thats hard to do for a kid with only 2 goals on the year...his heart and never say die attitude is contagious.

Other than if you assume that these guys are going to be on the 2018 squad, I don't see any reason to bring in Schroeder, Palmieri or Atkinson. These guys simply aren't good enough to come close to making the team.

I just dont see Yandle as a fit on this team. I watch all of the Yotes games and as great as he is on offense he is a total liability on defense.

Would Fowler be the better person in that role? I'm asking you as you probably see quite a few Anaheim games too being a Yotes fan.

I agree with that. I think it would doubly so on the big ice. Still think he makes the team.

Yes, I would take Fowler over Yandle but I like this team Chris Peters put together which includes neither:

http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/blog/ey...cting-team-usa

The only change I would have on this is Anderson as one of the goalies.

I like Peters team but I'd make one change in the forward group. I still like Jason Pominville over James van Riemsdyk and bump Pacioretty down a line.

Parise-Kesler-Kane
Pominville-Pavelski-Kessel
Pacioretty-Backes-Ryan
Oshie-Stastny- Brown
Callahan

I'm not huge on Stastny, but right now I don't see another center knocking him off the team.

Pominville and Kane essentially take the center's creative duties, but on the wings. Kesler and Pavelski are both skilled, can score and provide excellent defensive presence. The 3rd line provides a large physical yet skilled counter weight to any team. The top 3 lines can all score and are all defensively very solid.

The other guys I'd swap with Peters team is Faulk for Shattenkirk and Yandle for Byfuglien. I personally just have never been a huge fan of Byfuglien's game for whatever reason. I think Yandle is a perfect 7th defenseman to add an outstanding offensive game. I've also never been high on Shattenkirk's game as well, but I'm in a major man crush with Faulk.

Suter-Johnson
McDonaugh-E. Johnson
Orpik-Faulk
Yandle

The goalies look fine except I see

Quick
Miller
Schneider

I think having Byfuglien as a 7th/8th defenseman gives you some versatility. One he can be a PP specialist whether as a triggerman on the point or a big body in front of the net and two he can play up front if someone goes down to injury. I wouldn't feel too confident if he played top 6 minutes on the backend, but as an extra guy, I like what he brings.

I also think John Carlson could play his way onto the team. Should be fun to see how the competition plays out on the right side on the backend between EJ, Faulk, Shatt, Carlson, Bogosian, and even Byfuglien.

Galchenyuk with another assist tonight by the way.

That's 9 points in 15 games so far. Roughly a 50 point pace over 82 games. Just saying.
