I think we just don't know yet how good Kaberle is atm. Habs have been fully healthy all season so far on D, so as soon as Subban returned, Kaberle was out. I thought he looked a bit quicker and sharper than last year, although he didn't have the same PP impact because Markov had fully taken over there. There was hope for a mini-rebound from Kaberle given reported improvements in his fitness/conditioning, but I just don't know that we've seen him enough to evaluate.

I'd guess he's still a viable NHL-calibre player, however. Obviously not worth $4M. His issues on defense aren't as glaring IMHO as many exciteable Habs fans tend to claim. He doesn't make brutal giveaways, for example. He's smart enough and experienced enough to play his position reasonably well. The main issue is just general softness, letting the other team get to the corner first because he thinks he can position himself to reach around after they reach the boards, not even trying to move anybody in front of the net, etc, etc. Softness that really hurts the Habs given the rest of the D is pretty soft as well.

But if you found the right partner for Kaberle to take the physical load, and could then let Kaberle play his transition game and have some PP QB ice, he *might* be able to contribute. I don't think we can say this for certainty. He did contribute fine on the PP for the Habs last year. But never had a complementary defense pairing to work from in regular rotations.

It comes down to money and desperation, I'd say. If you don't have a cap team, but your team has enough money to pay him, and if you're desperate enough on D, maybe try him out. Don't give up anything of note for him. But don't listen to the exaggerated claims of his brutality either. He isn't exactly brutal. Just a really bad fit for the Habs and suffering from the usual backlash against a severely overpaid player.

I highly doubt Molson buys out Kaberle, 1 free payment is price enough. His contract isn't that since he's UFA after 2013-2014. Forget Peckam too, we'll finish the year with Bouilon and Tinordi, who's a much better player, will replace him next season.

Why would we give up a third when we can just punt him after the season with an amnesty buyout?

I'd be surprised if Molson didn't allow Bergevin to buy out Kaberle, money isn't an issue for him and after this off-season it showed he will do whatever it takes to get a winning team.
