Buffalo PA announcer

Penguins fan here that was at the game yesterday....

I noticed that the Sabres PA guy doesn't put much emotion into his goal announcements. I don't know if it's a good or bad thing, but just found it odd. For the record, I hate our own PA guy because he acts like its a monster truck rally. But yesterday, the most color he put into any announcement was when he announced Crosby's penalty. I just wondered what Sabres fans thought of him.

He's not the usual announcer, so it was a little flat yesterday.

Not true.

It WAS the normal announcer and he was off for a week or so, so maybe he was sick or something. I'm not sure. But that was indeed our normal guy and he NEVER sounds like that.

Never the case.

A few guys touched on it in the last page of the GDT

Jay Moran commonly tones it down for nationally televised games.

Thank God. The normal overly enthusiastic goal announcements for Buffalo make me cringe, as some who grew up with Milt Ellis. Even keeled baritone, for everything.

I prefer calm matter of fact announcing. Rather than carnival sideshow "Thooooooooooomaaaasss Vaaaaaaaaaneeeeeeek!" Or "Tyyyyyyyyyyler Myyyyyyyyyyyyerssss!"

Just cheesy IMO.

I 2nd that but most teams announcers are unfortunately going the cheesey sideshow route.

Someone has never been to a Syracuse Crunch game.

CRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRUNCH GOAL SCUERED! BY NUMBER BLAH BLAH BLAH

If anything, it should be like Mannheim. GOAL SCORED BY #57 TYLER and then the crowd yells MY-ERS

I guess even our PA announcer is finding it difficult to get excited about this team.

My only requirement for any PA announcement of a goal is to NOT end it with a WOOOOOOOOO! WWF yell. Obnoxious. Odd think is I think there are at least a few arenas where this is done.

I find the Bruin's PA guy to be soooo bush league with his "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" after announcing a Bruin's goal. It just sounds so....idk......wimpy.

I would even agree to spot the Bruins an extra goal every home game if that guy would knock it off.

This. I can hear his voice in my head whenever I want. He is the quintessential PA guy, imo.

You and me both.

Personally, if they can get Rod Mawhood(who does the PA duties for the OHL's Niagara IceDogs)to be the PA man for national games, that would work wonders. He does put some zip into his goal calls, but NOT to the extent that Jay does.(Rod has done some fill-in work for the Sabres before, so it wouldn't be new to him.)

Agreed. Milt Ellis or bust, same inflection for every goal, every penalty, any player, any team. The way it should be.

Beat to the punch. Thanks, 'Boni.

For those of you who know me, you know that the PA job at First Niagara Center is my 'career goal' for this hobby of mine. For those of you who don't know me:

I've been working in the event presentation field as a hobby for just about ten years (since I was a sophomore in high school). I started in basketball - then graduated to football, hockey, and even swimming. I've wanted that seat at FNC for as long as I can remember - and I'm starting to put myself in a position to show that I'm an asset to the organization. I'm currently the PA announcer for the 'Future Sabres' youth pre-game hockey games at FNC before the NHL games.

As far as my style - I think I'm somewhat of a hybrid. I try to keep the same tone for everything I call, but for 'home' (in this case Buffalo) goals / intros / etc - I put just a bit more emphasis on it. You won't hear anything obnoxiously long or drawn-out, but there is a little more edge to a Buffalo goal for me.

I could talk forever about my style and how I think I sound, but ultimately you folks are the judge. I hope to see some of you out at my other events (for example, I'll be PA announcer for the Jr. Sabres home finale at FNC on Wednesday, 7 PM).

I can only hope I'm able to give the position the respect it deserves, and that I am judged worthy of such a job by the rest of Hockey Heaven.
