Thing about Liles is that he's turning into the defensive version of Tanguay. For some reason dude just can't put a full season together. Either he gets hurt or struggles for extended stretches.

I still think the Avs made a big mistake trading him when they did, but what's done is done. Hope he turns it around soon.

I'd do Del Zotto, JT Miller and a pick for O'Reilly and O'Brien any day of the week

Erik Johnson - Michael Del Zotto
Tyson Barrie - Jan Hedja
Ryan Wilson - Stephan Elliot

The best thing about adding Del Zotto, or any Dman for that matter and getting EJ and Wilson back is that O'Bryrne, Hunwick and Zanon get benched.

I don't think we'd get that much.

I could see something like this happening though:

ROR + Obyrne + 3rd for MDZ + Miller

Then if the Avs were to stink it up this year and we drafted Jones, we'd have this D Core for next year:

MDZ - EJ(22-25 Mins a night)
Hejda - Barrie(20 Mins a night
Orrbrien - Jones(15-18 Mins a night, Jones getting more as the season goes).

Would be a really good Dcore right there, MDZ/EJ/Barrie/Jones. Elliott and Siemens in the minors to replace Hejda and Obrien in a year or 2.

If we get MDZ, there is no way we draft jones unless Mackinnon and Drouin are both gone.

There is... if the front office deems him to be the BPA.

I am a big believer in going for BAP. Looks like the Avs are too. Otherwise they probably would have gone for Adam Larsson and not Landeskog in the 2011 draft.

Indeed. Hard to argue given their recent draft record. It's why I trust their selections when they go off board with the likes of Hishon (pre-concussion - looked like a steal) and will see how Mitchell Heard pans out. 2009 is looking like a doozy of a draft for us.

There is no way we draft Jones unless we pick #1. Odds are against us getting that pick. We will probably pick in the 4-8 range.

Larsson was considered BAP after Nuge on draft day

Who central scouting or TSN ranks as BAP obviously isn't what I meant.

Not to the Avs, he wasn't. BPA is subjective and the Avs quite clearly considered him to be the BPA.

I don't know if that woud be a reason for them. Having MDZ, EJ, and Jones for years to come would be huge for this team. Bring in a vet "teacher type" defesneman in the offseason like Regehr and you got a damn solid top four.

MDZ - EJ
Regehr - Jones

Depends what Barrie shows the rest of the year. If he keeps playing 22+ minutes and putting up decent points, I think they will pencil him in on the right side of the second pairing.

______-EJ
Hejda-Barrie
Wilson-_____

Not saying they should avoid Jones because they have Barrie, but if they really like someone like Drouin then I think having Barrie might tip the scale a bit to picking a forward.

Agreed, that was fantastic trolling by all,

Best part was the Leafs fans were actually buying it.

Anyway, I almost feel if we were to trade ROR and get MDZ and JT Miller back, our offense would be pretty deep as it is, while our Defense would still be missing one more guy.

With Miller also in our lineup for next year, we would probably have:

McPing - Duchene - PAP
Landy - Stastny - Downie
Jones - Miller - Pajamas
McCleod - Malkin - Olver

With Sgarbossa, Bordeleau, Malone all in the system who could be called up for different roles.

I mean obviously it certainly wouldn't hurt to have a Drouin or Mckinnon in that group, but I think that's still a solid offense without them.

While on Defense without Jones we would have:

MDZ - EJ
Hejda - Barrie
Obrien - Hunwick

That's a decent defense, but Jones would make it a lot better, and would give us our full D core for the future of:

MDZ - EJ
Jones - Barrie
Siemens - Elliott

All playing around 20 mins a night, that could very well be 3 solid D pairings for us.

Sather isn't adding a player like Miller on top of MDZ for ROR.

He'd have to if the Avs are going to take a Liles like defenseman in return for O'Reilly.

I disagree, I think if this is the deal that happens, it will be something like that.

MDZ + Miller for ROR + Obyrne + 3rd.

Its already been rumored to be MDZ + Prospect for ROR, Miller would be the type of guy the Avs would want.

Well, let's be fair, MDZ is more than just a "Liles-like" player.

But I would certainly hope that Sherman would want more on top of it. I want Sherman to get the value he and his team have decided that O'Reilly is worth in a trade.

Rangers window is wide open for this and next year (Gaborik contract). Adding a player like O'Reilly would make Rangers much more equipped to go up against Pens and Boston. Don't for a second think this is lost on Sather. If that's enough to get him to make a deal is anyones guess and it depends on a lot of things, but O'Reilly is pretty much a perfect fit on the Rangers. They have a coach, GM and a fan base that loves skilled blue collar guys and that's what you get in O'Reilly. In a year, he'd be as popular as Callahan.

I think if the Avs get a good Dman back for ROR, even at the Kuli, Sekera, Gardiner level (meaning not sure fire top 2), drafting a forward this year would be wise. Duke and Kobe will be gone most likely, and I'd say Stazz being on the Avs by opening night 2015 is 50/50 at best. Losing ROR leaves a hole in our quality forward pool, and will need addressed.
I think EJ, (ROR), Barrie, Elliott, Wilson, Siemans, and even Hejda look promising as a group over the next couple years.
I think if the Avs can land a couple good FA signings (Smid, Bozak, a pk forward or two, come to mind), this team is in good shape to start the year 2013-2014.

And on a side note, this team has shown enough fight even with all the injuries that I think we'll end up drafting between 7-12 this year. To me, Tank for Jones/Mac seems more like a dream now than a possibility.

With all this talk about Michael Del Zotto I'm going to have to watch Rangers games just to see what kind of player he is. Rather form my own opinion then agree with the Liles comparison or the no. 2 defender projection. If we can get someone like Miller or Kreider on top of MDZ then I can't say its a bad trade.
