Comparing this years version of Emery to last years is two entirely different people.

Last years emery was solid the first half of the season. There were even people saying he should be starting over Crawford.

Yes.

He does seem to be quicker in his side-to-side movement this season but a lot of the goals that got past Emery last season (and to be fair Crawford as well) were redirects, usually from the slot, or from rebounds. This season Emery is still leaving too many rebounds for my liking (he was better on Sunday), but his positioning is solid and the defense is bailing him out much more often. The team is also clogging the slot area much better. He wasn’t as bad as folks liked to make out last season. If Emery had one or two bad goal against him, Coldice would be leading the parade about how bad he is, always has been and always will be.
Now to get Q’s confidence (to allow him to get in a groove)! That’s another story. We all know how stubborn Q can be with certain players. He may have no other choice however if CC can’t return for a bit.
When I hear Q use the phrase “he’s made progress”, that certainly sounds to me like he is describing concussion-like symptoms. I hope I’m reading too much into it but we heard similar statements from him when Toews and Bolland were concussed.

He's been good this year, no complaints. Don't even mention last year, he was horrendous and that's the way it always was. I don't hate Emery and never did. I hate awful players. He was awful last year, all year. This year, he has been good all year with the exception of the first Phoenix game but he was great against Calgary so they balance out.

/\ That's difficult to believe. You were on Emery's case before he even put the Blackhawk uniform on.

He was not awful all of last year. He had a stretch of like 7-9 games where he put up the best stats of any goalie in the league.

I never liked him, at all, but hate implies a blindness to the facts so that's why I won't use that word because I feel like i have called it straight since we signed him.

He had 3 and half very good games in a row. That was his best stretch.

Our defense is entirely different too. Even the Emery we had last year would be fine behind this defense.

To that point it's also as if we have a totally new team defense as well. You know the world is about to end when Keith is clearing pucks out of the crease.

I remember that, about a year ago at this time, the sports-talk airwaves were crackling with demands that Kane be traded for a front-line Goaltender.

Thank G_d the people who matter didn't pay any attention to such idiocy...

it is easy to say that now, but if Crawford or Emery couldnt stop a beachball right now, you dont think people would be asking for the Hawks to move a top player to get a goalie?

the only reason Kane was mentioned was because it seemed he was destined for AA instead of hoisting the Cup again. damn glad the kids head is on straight and is taking this **** seriously as I was one of those who said if this kid doesnt grow up he needs to be moved.

You were rooting against him the minute he was invited to training camp.. despite coming off an outstanding run in Anaheim, helping propel them to the playoffs.

You thought you were right about Emery last year and brought up how "bad" you thought he was whenever you had a chance.

Emery wasn't awful last year. As far as back-ups go, he was pretty average.

Emery: 15-9-4, 2.81GAA, .900Sv%

Biron: 12-6-2, 2.46GAA, .903Sv%
Johnson: 6-7-2, 3.11GAA, .883Sv%
Montoya: 9-11-5, 3.11GAA, 0.893Sv%
Conklin: 5-6-1, 3.28GAA, .883Sv%
Auld: 2-4-2 (14GP), 3.35GAA, 883Sv%
Budaj: 5-7-5, 2.55GAA, .913Sv%
Labarbera: 3-9-3, 2.54GAA, .911Sv%
Bernier: 5-6-2, 2.36GAA, .908Sv%
C.Mason: 8-7-1, 2.59GAA, .898Sv%
Boucher: 1-6-1, 3.40GAA, .880Sv%
Raycroft: 2-8, 3.51GAA, .897Sv%

Yeah, we've had this argument a billion times. I don't believe in "backups". There was a time in the NHL where every team had a "backup" and it was acceptable for them to play poorly but those days are long gone. If that comes back into vogue, I may change my opinion but I don't see it happening as the position is as deep as it has ever been world wide. Emery has played well this year though and it has been great to see.

Those days are far from long gone, lots of teams still have "back-ups", and a lot of them are worse than Emery.

Why worried about Emery? the only time you have to worry about him is when the team goes into a shell in the 3rd period and plays ****** defense.

Point taken... but I was railing against such thoughts at the time, too.

Not saying I have any special insight- sometimes I get some right (e.g.: during the Belfour-Hašek exposure, I lobbied for the moving of Belfour), and sometimes I get some wrong (e.g.: I didn't think that Paul Coffey's winter in Philadelphia would wind up with an MIA report [but then, I had a lot of company on that mis-assessment]).

It's cool that we can enjoy the ride, for now...

Emery was great or terrible. He had 34 appearances last year, in 15 he was .920 or better, and in 13 he was sub .900.

You mean he can't stop shots through 3 guys bodies , 2 of them are usually our own guys? What goalie can on a consistent basis?

We definitely need Crawford back soon. At the same time, Emery has an easy assignment, just don't **** up too bad, and he has passed with flying colors.

Our defense was very bad last year, Hammer is playing much better and Leddy isn't expect to play top 4 D minutes, overal much better...

I mean just look at last nights game... when Seabrook is out they were a little shaky because you had to move everyone up in the Line up... SUre Craw and Emery are playing better than last year, but we had stretches and games where Our D was pitiful.
