Personally I like captains like Doan and Morrow. Lunch bucket guys that play hard all the time.

I think the best Captains are those that can be legitimate game-breakers while also serving as an example for work ethic and community leadership.

It just seems to me that he has been a leader in the Wings room for a long time. An easy decision when Lidstrom retired to make him captain.

I think everyone is just voting for the captains that have been around the longest. Then again how else are you supposed to rate them?

I narrowed my choices down to Crosby, Iginla, Alfredsson, Backes and Toews.

Good to know I'm not insane and people tend to agree with me.

I voted Iginla.

Sure. But there is less pressure to being a leader without a "C" on your chest.

There isn't? Every player in the locker room is looked to for advice, answer questions from the media, have their abilities questioned when things don't go well, have the responsibility of talking to the refs, ect, ect?

I'm a fan of (insert your team here) and you say he's bottom 5 ?! Well, (insert all the stuff that makes your captain great here).

(Obligatory shot across the bow at your rival's captain, or the the team's captain of whomever insulted your captain)

Yeah, Gionta doesn't fit this algorithm.

Voted Toews because he appears to be a great leader.

Unfortunately we can never know, really you'd have to play for all 30 NHL teams to be able to rank them properly. Somebody go ask Kyle Wellwood.

Voted Iginla

Class act player, elite skill level, been Captain of his team for the last decade, helped take them to a Stanley Cup finals game 7

This is a tough one for HF to gauge though as most of us only really know our own team's captain and only have perceptions of others. My perception is that Iginla is the best captain in the league

Why is Crosby obviously #1?! And why is Horcoff probably #30??? The amount of respect the young stars on the Oilers have for Horcoff is astounding. He plays in every situation. He does everything he possibly can to break up chances against and set up chances for. I don't think he's one of the best, but I don't see why he'd be THE worst...not at all.

Read the whole post. He said he was ranking them on on-ice performance.

Lol this may be the least informed opinions ever spouted on HF. No one knows how good or bad a captain is (with a few exceptions) without being in that locker room.

I'm not voting because I think these polls are just as dumb as the threads on the trade board that start "Player XXX will NEVER be traded but I just want to see his value, remember you have to OVERPAYZ!"

For me, as a fan, this is who I would want leading my team:

1. Zdeno Chara
2. Jonathan Toews
3. Shane Doan
4. Andrew Ladd
5. Jarome Iginla
6. David Backes
7. Daniel Alfredsson
8. Ryan Getzlaf
9. Eric Staal
10. Henrik Zetterberg

11. Ryan Callahan
12. Brian Gionta
13. Bryce Salvador
14. Vincent Lecavalier
15. Shea Weber
16. Gabriel Landeskog
17. Ed Jovanovski
18. Brenden Morrow
19. Mikko Koivu
20. Claude Giroux

21. Sidney Crosby
22. Jason Pominville
23. Henrik Sedin
24. Alexander Ovechkin
25. Dustin Brown
26. Joe Thornton
27. Dion Phaneuf
28. Mark Streit
29. Shawn Horcoff

I don't think Toews has ever had a lazy shift in his life.
