Feeling bad for the Sabre fans, horrible contract and all. Does Buff wipe their hands clean or attempt to trade him for a 10th rounder?

Leino is on IR right now, has been the entire season, and no indication that he'll be back before the end of the year. If he stays on IR, then he can't be bought out in the summer and this thread is a moot point.

Agreed. Furthermore, I think the Sabres would like to see if Leino can regain (to at least some extent) the form he showed during the 2010 playoffs with the Flyers. He had an awful season last year, but he hasn't yet had a chance to show that he can bounce back. Even more, given the length of time Leino has spent on IR this season, it might require some patience once he does return to allow him to get back to game pace before evaluating whether or not he is worth hanging on to. Ultimately, even if Leino does come back before the end of the year (and is thus eligibile for a compliance buyout), I don't think the Sabres will exercise this right due to the fact that he's only had one year of play on this current contract.

They still have the season after to buy him out. I don't think they do it this summer. He might still be recovering from surgery then, in which case I think the PA makes a huge stink about it. And even if he's not, I think knowing they still have another year where they can use a compliance buy out, I think they'll give him another look in the line-up to see if he can contribute. At camp it looked like he, Grigorenko and Ott had good chemistry.

Buffalo will probably buy him out in the next off season. Give him a season to see try and show he's useful.

Waive him, the Isles may pick him up on re-entry

Re-entry waivers don't exist anymore in the new CBA though. I think.

Unless the Sabres are pushing the upper limit of the cap, no reason to buy him out. They don't save much pure cash wise by buying him out now (buying him out costs 10 million this summer, 7.5 million next, so keeping him around for one extra season costs 1.5 million more) Assuming new coach, new front office, and a drastically different roster, why not let him earn a spot.

I'd go with this unless there's big UFA coming to Buffalo next offseason.

I think that ott will help him turn it around here and we lack some of what leino brings.

Leino would be such a good addition to almost any team. It's just his cap hit.

For the record, I am aware I'm stating the obvious.

He still has something to prove and I believe there's a chance he could be a 40-55pt player again, just needs the right chemistry on whichever line.

Boy the first 20 pages of this book sure sucked I'll stop reading it.

It's not even sunk cost fallacy, Leino has proven to be a better player in the past. Maybe not one deserving of such a contract, but cutting now would be a mistake.
