This is what free agency is for. Trade existing players for picks, etc. and sign veteran talent to lead the prospects. That's why the Wings signed players like Brad Park while drafting guys like Yzerman.

I'd like to keep Cammy as well. I think him and Tangs have a couple more good years in them and they can really provide some good leadership to the young guys.

Trade:

Iginla
Kiprusoff
Bouwmeester
Giordano
Sarich
Stempniak

Keep Tanguay, Cammalleri, Glencross. All 3 provide some leadership.

Glencross - Tanguay - Cammalleri
Cervenka - Horak - Hudler
UFA - Backlund - Baertschi
Bouma - Aliu - Jackman

Extra: Nemisz, Comeau

Wideman - Brodie
Butler - UFA
Sarich - Smith

Extra: Carson

Ramo/Taylor/Irving

Tough to attract quality free agents when you're a bottom feeder with not much going for it. See Edmonton as an example. I mean sure, you can get some 4th line leadership guys, but that's not what I was referring to when I mentioned veteran talent. A team needs player like Tanguay or even Cammalleri to insulate the prospects as they come up - instead of throwing them straight to wolves, let them ease into it while the veterans take some of the harder match ups, at least initially.

I think Cammalleri's leadership qualities are way overstated and his shot is only good when he feels like using it. Plus, both Tanguay and Cammalleri aren't the most durable of players, but Cammalleri especially has struggled with injuries the last few years.

But the team could stagger the trade process too. Trade Iginla and Kipper this season/off season for picks and prospects. Then in the following season, trade Cammalleri and one of Giordano or Bouwmeester, depending on whether or not Bouwmeester is willing to re-sign or waive his NTC.

This is a pretty solid plan. Not a big fan of moving Backlund though. I also think you may be overvaluing Sarich and Butler.

Kyle QUincy returned a first and an over the hill Hal Gill has returned a 2nd on a couple occasions I believe. At the deadline defensemen return alot.

I don't care for the idea of Iginla being traded to Pheonix, not that it would ever happen from a financial perspective. Iginla doesn't fit their system, he doesn't have the best chance for a cup there, and Pheonix is in no position to give away 1st Rounders or prospects.

Yeah the Islanders trade is a bit... hinkey.

Don't know if Nino will ever recover, and that's a big price to pay for a question mark.

It would be pretty hilarious for Playfair to be coaching Iginla again though.

I could see Phoenix being on his list as he's good friends with Doan.

Quick fantasy question. Hudler or Tanguay who's the better player offensively?

Could go either way with those two. They're both having great seasons. Hudler's line has been more consistent then Tanguay's so far but we could see the Cammalleri-Tanguay-Iginla line break out at any time.. If Hartley keeps the same lines as last game of course.

Hmmmm, okay thanks. I'd rather go with Tanguay if he's going to be playing with those players.

I think the edge would go to Tanguay, but Hudler has been lights out since joining the Flames.

Mark Giordano - Dennis Wideman
TJ Brodie - Brandon Gormley
Chris Breen - Kevan Miller

Karri Ramo
Ray Emery

I actually really like your plan, and your line-up for next season
1. Might have to eat some (not much) money from the Phoenix trade.
2. Smid will more than likely resign with the Oilers... I would just bring in a steady number 5/6 who is physical, and keep Brodie up. Maybe Douglas Murray... 3yrs x 2.75
3. I really think that the Weiss contract would come back and bite us bad. 5yrs @ 5 would be more than fair with the new CBA. Can't see many/any teams offering more than that... Most contenders are set at C already.
4. I like your Emery idea, but I'd probably go after Al Montoya. Bit younger, and higher upside. Same contract.
5. I would look at move Stajan... I'm not a hater, I just think he wouldn't be needed with the new additions.

Curtis Glencross - Stephen Weiss - Jarome Iginla
Roman Cervenka - Tyler Bozak - Jiri Hudler
Sven Baertschi - Chris Kelly - Nino Niederreiter
Lance Bouma - Blair Jones - Colton Orr
Tim Jackman - Roman Horak

Jay Bouwmeester - Mark Giordano
TJ Brodie - Dennis Wideman
Douglas Murray - Brandon Gormley
Chris Breen - Kevan Miller

Karri Ramo
Al Montoya

This is Re-tooling instead of scorched earth. We would have plenty of picks at a solid draft, and probably pick in the top 5-7. Add some promising pieces like Gormely, Nino, Montoya... While adding some grit Murray, Orr, Kelly and depth at C with Bozak, Weiss... (and Kelly).

(Barkov or Monahan developing one more season )

I don't understand why everyone is so keen on keeping Cammy. Guy is not who we want him to be an is getting up there in age to maybe it his high of 38 again.

there is alot more questions around Backlund than Nino in my opinion, I think he is finally being developed properly in the AHL imo. A conditional pick or something could be added if Kipper wins 35+ games or something too.

He is a full point per game, but in the spirit of debate 7 of his 11 points game in 2 games.

Do we apply this same argument to other players? Iginla got 30 goals but 6 came in 2 games.

I think last year Sam Gagne got something silly like 17% of his points in one single spectacular night. I believe that whole week was unbelievable for him.

Regardless, he manages to be a consistent 40pt player each year. That's what really counts.
