Problem is you wait, until the trade deadline and you find out that he's a NHL starter and Hiller is done, then what do you do?

Pay Fasth 5+ over more than 2 years and then buyout Hiller?

It is a risk I'll agree, but at 2.9mil you can deal with it. I mean after all no one in the East will have him figured out, so you could always deal him there if the West figures him out.

As much as i like Jonas...he's gotta be flipped in the offseason for forward depth since this is it for Teemu and its probably end of the line for Saku.

So pretty much $3 million a season for 8 NHL games?

No. $3 million a season in anticipation that he can carry that play beyond 8 games. Imagine how much he would be worth at the end of the season.

As the only goalie acquisition to ever work out properly for him, maybe to whichever team Brian Burke is in charge of at year's end.

Pretty much, but he's alson not some 20 year old rookie. The guys has been lights out in the SEL for a while, so its a good bet that his current play isn't just luck.

Bit high for 8 games, but I doubt the price gets less anyway.

Pretty much means either Hiller or Fasth will be used as a trade bait in the offseason. Which one will be determined over the course of the season. Right now you have to think Hiller will be shipped out (Fasth playing better and Hiller has the bigger cap...moving that money could assure re-signing Getzlaf AND Perry)

Kind of early. Should have waited little longer though doubt Fasth's play will drop by a lot and he's been solid in he's career before NA.

Well, not ANA fan so don't have to worry about that .

With Gibson coming up, you'd think this spells the end of Hiller in Anaheim.

Seems a bit high, but he's playing insanely well right now.

I think they aren't going to rush Gibson. Andersen is looking terrific. He'll probably serve as back up to Fasth if Hiller gets traded until Gibson is good and seasoned.

And being the first goalie since Lundqvist to be the SEL goalie of the year? This isn't money for a starter. It's money for a good back up. He's shown that at worst he can be a very capable back up. I think he deserves the money. If he proved himself any more down the line he could have fetched 5+

By all accounts, Anaheim is not a team that will spend to the cap anyway. They have never spent more than 59 M since the last lockout from what I can tell and they are usually around 55 M in payroll.

If you are paying Getzlaf and Perry 8M + each next season, spending 13% of a 55 M payroll on goaltending could be problematic.

A bit surprised it happened this soon, and a tiny bit surprised the raise didn't end up a bit smaller, as I still had hoped for. But in the end, if that's what it took, I'm absolutely taking it over losing him to free agency.

In my opinion, there isn't much of a thing as "figuring out" goalies at that level, unless they really have remarkable holes to their games. I don't see it being that way with Fasth, and I suppose the Ducks don't, either. His stats won't always be as sexy as they are now, obviously, and more pucks are going to get by him than they do now, but there isn't going to be a lot of "figuring him out" involved.

No, not really. You don't pay for stats. You pay for quality (or one's assessment of it). I understand that people aren't convinved if they haven't seen him a lot. Hell, even if they have, I respect when people go about it like Canucks' coach Vigneault (IIRC), who admits to not knowing enough about goaltending to talk much about it and leave it to his goalie coach. But NHL front offices don't necessarily need a big number of games to base an evaluation on. He's a 30-year old veteran they have been watching for more than a year before signing him. He's not riding a hot streak to his wins right now, either. His numbers are equivalent of a hot streak, but he hasn't been unbeatable, making tons of low-percentage shots. He has just been sound, and there's nothing in his play that would suggest his play isn't entirely sustainable. His numbers probably won't be, but that's a different matter.

I don't think anyone realistically expects Gibson challenges for the job until a few years. Most goalies don't enter the NHL at the age of 20-21, but if he does, then that is a good problem to have.

In regards to Hiller and Fasth coexisting, Fasth's backloaded deal paying him $2.4M in the first and $3.4M in the second year, I would agree that it seems to make it relatively unlikely that both are still with the Ducks too deep into next year, before Hiller's contract runs out. $6.9M for that type of tandem doesn't take away the option of keeping both that long, though.
