Nashville could have asked for the moon in return for Weber...

So Holmgren decides to pursue Suter but obviously he doesn't look too interested in coming here from the beginning and the next logical step is to consider a one-for-one swap around JVR which is still better than ending up without any help on defense. At that point the market had already dried up.

The Weber OS was just a big gamble with slim chances to actually succeed.
It was better than a slim chance. Their billionaire minority owner increased his stake in the team to create enough cashflow to finance the 13M bonus. If he decides he doesn't want to do that, it's very probable that Weber is in Philly.

I'd be interested in seeing what Ruff can do with a better roster. I don't know that I'm interested in seeing that experiment in Philly though. Only I am kinda interested. But not really.

So, yeah.

Realistically though, Ruff probably won't be on the market long enough for the Flyers to get a crack at him if things head south with Lavi. Could easily see Ruff being this year's Boudreau.

Ruff has always been high on my "list of people in the NHL I hate," so I would have a hard time getting behind him. I'm sure if it did happen I would come around, but the thought of it at this point is not something that I'd like to see happen.

It's hard to imagine Ruff not with the Sabre's.

Just saw the quote of the day on NHL.com:

Quote:
"Just these games themselves carry a lot of emotion and a lot of energy. Great game for the players, for the fans, everybody. It was a good playoff-type atmosphere, playoff-type hockey."

— Flyers coach Peter Laviolette after Philly's 6-5 win against the Penguins on Wednesday
I get the atmosphere part but if he still thinks 6-5 is playoff-type hockey, he hasn't changed since last season.

Lavy's all emotion very little tactics. The injuries and short season will give him cover.

Rather than use a sentence or two to deduce his entire philosophy and strategic approach, I'd take with a grain of salt what he says when he's gloating to the dumb media right after a game.

Ruff? No.

I found the quote from Lavi about the Pitt game being good playoff hockey a bit disconcerting as well...

While the barn burners are kind of fun too watch if you are not sporting a pace maker....it's definitely not ideal "playoff" hockey and it will set you up for a false sense of security when you run into the likes of tight checking teams like the Devils.

As far as Ruff....yeah not my favorite person in the world but not going to deny that he is a capable coach. His longevity is not something to sneeze at....there was a reason he lasted as long as he did in Buffalo.

Lindy Ruff is available now, would be a great replacement he coached Briere before as well when buffalo was a playoff team.

Why the hell would they hire Lindy Ruff?!?! I can't stand that guy. He went 15 seasons with the same team and won 0 cups, no thanks.

Just because he coached Briere doesn't mean Briere liked him. They were talking to one ex-Sabre yesterday and he was saying how much he and others including Lafontaine hated him. Among other words he used was "arrogant" when describing him.

Lindy Ruff? **** no. But I think it would be prudent to sound out a replacement for next season if Lavy can't turn it around.

Not that it isn't ugly already, but things could get worse. March is brutal for the Flyers, save for that break from the 19th-23rd.

OTT, @NYR, PIT, @BOS, BUF, @NJ, NJ, @TB, @PIT, NYR, NYI, BOS, WAS

Eight of those games are at home, but we saw how well that went last night. I'd be very surprised if they do better than 6-7 in March, and I'd say that even that's a stretch.

Ruff is not a good option. I'm all for firing Lavy right now and getting Tocchet but I'd be ok with waiting until the offseason so we can get a decent draft position.

The only thing Lavy is good at is calling timeouts and beating the penguins. Otherwise he makes questionable line-up discussions left and right, combine with the fact that he can't come up with a gameplan to beat the ranger or devils or even get the guys to play a full 60.

It seems to be the only thing he's gotten fired up over so far this year.

When I saw Lavy get fired up during the Pens game I thought that maybe he was finally waking up and might go back to being the motivator he had been for the team, but he seemed to go right back to the mildly indifferent, kinda scared look he's had for most of the year against the Panthers...

It feels like this team needs Iron Mike type of coach, but more adjusted to today's hockey.

Wasn't Tocchet pretty bad in Tampa though?
