We all know that guys like Mats, Nolan, Joe, Roberts and Eddie are mainly responsible for our winning ways of late. But who would you say has been our unsung hero?
Several worthy candidates in that group but my vote goes to Berg. He really doesn't get a fair shake. Just now some Leaf fans are seeing his worth. I don't expect the rest of the fans on this board to ever acknowledge that Aki has value. They will only be able to remember that one time that they saw him and he happened to give the puck away
Their heads will be in the sand (being nice and polite here) every time the kid has a solid game.
I picked Berg because he is having a very good year and has been playing very solild hockey so far. My second pick would have to be Fitzgerald who has found his spot on this team and who also has been playing very well, chipping in goals and always playing hard.
Reason being is that the youngster has been quite solid as a 20 year old on a Veteran Team ..
...but the fact that on a team with lots of older Vets...its was the rallying around the kid that pulled them all together and made them a team...
He is like there little brother out there and nobody better touch him..and when teammates start sticking up for each other, it makes them closer and the results are shown on the ice in their performance..
So Matty Stajan ...Hands down wins..for being the right kind of KID at the right time..
I picked Klee because I think he has gone a long way to stabilizing the blueline, potentially our most valuable defenseman. He has been very solid and has even has a chance to show some offense.
I agree with the Berg pick though. I was saying that he's been greatly improved a year and a half ago and he's still getting better. He's not quite living up to his 3rd overall billing yet, but at least now it's looking like a remote possibility one day.
Far too often have I heard that he can't do squat. Well he's scored 42 and 51 points the past two seasons, has been a constant defensive contributor, and has learned to check this year. Robert Reichel, you deserve this.
Note: On a philisophical level, wouldn't the person with the least amount of votes by the end of this vote truly be the "unsung" hero? hmmmm.....
I voted for Fitzy - excellent, hard working role player, versatile enough to be inserted wherever he's needed... all qualties he's displayed last season. Where he has stepped it up this year IMO is in his leadership. With the departure of Corson and Green, the more grounded, team-first leadership styles of the Fitzys and Klees are far more apparent and influential. Like Nolan and Nieuwy, Fitz has been one of the veterans who has had a more direct mentorship role with respect to the younger players he plays with on the same line. He's been more vocal as one of the team's spokesmen to the media... he's still the third/fourth line defensive forward from last season, but in terms of the intangibles, Fitzy's impact on the team morale over the past month has been huge.
