The reason the idea's receiving so much pushback is that he doesn't necessarily directly address the Penguins' one glaring need (top 6 left wing) and the fanbase has their hearts set on any number of "sexier" acquisitions (Stewart, Kulemin, etc).

The resistance you see has nothing to do with Cullen himself.
While I agree with you in theory about Cullen - being a useful vet ... I see him as a third liner in Pittsburgh. I just don't see him fitting with Crosby or with Malkin.

I think Cullen could play with Crosby, he is an upgrade over Dupuis.

Dupuis & Crosby play very well together. If Dupuis gets moved off of that line it's going to be for a legitimate top six winger.

Dupes and Crosby have very good chemistry. That amounts to alot in my mind. I'm not sure Cullen is an upgrade over him when you consider that. I would want a legit top six guy if you are moving him to the third line, not someone like Cullen (that isn't supposed to be a knock on him either). I still say he is a third line guy in Pittsburgh, Cullen that is.

Cullen makes less than zero sense for the Pens. Friedman can return to the bong now and come up with something else.

NB: Not saying Cullen is a bad player. He just does nothing to address any Pens weaknesses.

Cullen to Pit sounds like something Eklund would make up but Friedman is very credible.

The problem is Cullen isn't the shore fire top 6 upgrade the Pens need but he may come cheap, does seem versatile and the Pens may want another versatile veteran that can play anywhere in the lineup, especially given Tyler Kennedy's terrible play this season. It really wouldn't surprise me if TK is dumped and replaced with a veteran depth player around the deadline if he doesn't get his game together by then.

He may be very credible, but he did not even claim to have any information. It was a random list of 30 thoughts on the NHL, in which he stated Cullen looked like a Pens kind of player to him.

Cullen should not cost you a lot maybe a second round pick max.

I like Matt Cullen, but he doesn't address our needs. Friedman kind of **** the bed on that speculation, IMO.

Probably true, but it doesn't change the fact that he's not a player worth displacing a guy who has proven chemistry with Sid. Not a bad player by any means, he just doesn't address the needs of the Pens.

No from Minnesota. Brodie has been terrible and Granlund is still developing. Outside of Koivu, we have no other top 9 center.
