My biggest struggle with modern music right now is the auto-tune computerized function that a lot of modern pop, rock, and even country artists have been using to record their studio bits.
Not a lot of people can hear the slightly synthesized nature of their voices, but for some reason, I've always been able to tell. I dated a music major in college and the school got a brand new auto-tune synthesizer that she thought was amazing. Couldn't really tell, she said... I said I could so she put together 20 different samples and I correctly identified all of them as either natural or auto-tuned.
What burns my chops even more is when the vocal track isn't 100% auto-tuned and just certain notes are to achieve the tone they are looking for... Yes, I am talking about Nickelback here. One of their more popular songs has a few high notes and a few lower notes auto-tune and only those notes. Can't. Stand. Listening. To. It.
I don't mind autotune when it's done over-the-top and the use of it is intended to be obvious/ a stylistic choice.
But seriously,
If you can't hit a note, don't write it into the music. Stage singers have to edit(well really I doubt they themselves edit) songs to fit in their range, and you know what, those songs aren't any worse because of it.
I can see some of the claims made in this thread about Country. Some of them are valid. The "this is country" stuff lately is getting annoying. Most of the songs are catchy...but they're so damn annoying.
The reason I love country is that you can hear the song once, maybe twice, and you can sing along with it. I've heard that some people want more complicated songs, but why listen to music that you have to spend hours listening to in order to get the lyrics down?
Plus, what's more fun than singing about booze and women? Some country songs can get absolutely stupid silly and those can be the best ones. Brad Paisley and Tim McGraw know how to have fun and it shows in their music.
And seriously, guys, for those of you who have a girlfriend/fiance/wife/SO, if you can listen through this album and not find a song that doesn't remind you of that special someone, then I'll...be flabergasted I guess. So many great love songs, and the dude can sing.
And in a completely unrelated direction, Fel I think you'll enjoy this, in my french class today I had to write 15 sentences about a fictional trip to another country. I had about 10 minutes to do it before class because it was assigned a few days ago, so I didn't really have a whole lot of time to think it through. I decided to say I went to Quebec, travelled through Shawinigan, Quebec City, and Gatineau. And I said I ate Poutine the entire time. Described how to make it and my teacher, a guy who was born in Africa and then lived in Parise for a few years before coming over here to teach, now wants to try it. Got bonus points for teaching him a "french" dish that he never had

Just listened to most of that Josh Turner album (skipped that God song, gross), and while it was better than other country albums I still can't dig it. I guess "left hand man" kinda makes me think of my SO but man all the love songs I was thinking "yeah it's great this guy feels that way about his girl, but man I can put my feelings for mine in a much more eloquent way".
That's my problem with country, it's a genre that is completely driven by lyrics but the lyrics to me are boring and unimaginative with their wording/phrasing.

It's the same thing with Mozart. Many love his music for the simplicity and beauty he could create without being complicated, but I find it boring, much rather listen to Tchaikovsky.

NSFW I guess, but interracial pornography featuring black performers is most popular and common in the deep south in some of the most racist areas of the country. That genre in that area is more popular than any specific genre in any other part of the United States. Racists are weird
So not to completely derail the conversation about country music (I live in Superior WI nine months out of the year, I hear way too much of it already) but I've got a weird question. So I've got this Wild hat from my late grandfather. He bought it for himself on my birthday at the lodge against the Oilers and they won. The next game we went to a few days later against the Nucks and they won so he decided to wear it only for division opponents as kind of a superstition thing. Well a week later he passed away and my grandmother gave it to me. My question is that if the realignment occurs should I wear it against the current teams (nucks, oil, flames, avs) or our new division? I wouldn't get to wear it that much if I didn't switch so I'm a little torn. What do you guys think?

I love music that I can listen to 100 times and hear new things. I love memorizing all the patterns, rhythms, melodies, tonalities. Just like a well-crafted harmony can bring a melody to another level, when you start stacking parts on top of parts that all enrich each other, it's fantastic.
Of course then I can also love something a lot more simple like the Avett Brothers. But that's got layers as well, harmonies and parts that fit together. And then with the simple music, the songwriting is even more important.
What bugs me with country and pop music is they come up with a hook, pound that into your head, and half ass the rest of it. Yeah it might be catchy but it's not all that interesting. Kind of like drawing a circle versus painting a picture.

I've listened to Tchaikovsy's 4th at least 50 times. This week i just heard a really cool part the low brass does. It was awesome.
Watched the latest episode last night. I loved how they tied real-life events into an episode plot.
As awesome as "The Americans" renewal news is, this should've also happened with "Terriers". Amazing show that received great reviews and was cancelled due to FX not marketing it properly.
It's on Netflex's streaming service if anybody is interested and I would say it's definitely worth the watch.

That reminds me of my French teachers.
First teacher was half Egyptian, super hot gal in her 20's. Second teacher was just a Minnesotan who spoke French. Third teacher was from the Middle East. Last teacher was a native speaker from Gabon. The last guy was so hard to understand, it really took a while to get used to it.

I knew Poutine was a canadian dish, but my teacher interpreted me telling him about eating it in Quebec to mean its a french dish. Either way its delicious so i wont correct him.
Did my Wild speech in class today. I was scheduled to go second but the first never showed up so i had to go. Started off with a lame joke that kind of set the mood. 'What doesthe Minnesota wild have in common with the titanic?' 'Both look good until they hit the ice'. Used that to go on about how the Wild always come into the season with so much promise but always disappoint.
Also tried to describe the MiG lacrosse goal and why he is so popular...so hard to do with no stick or anything to actually hold. I looked like such a fool
Overall i think i did alright. 4:52 and the limit was 5 minutes so that works.
