JVR The Big Man

Really impressed with JVR's play so far, 11 goals on the season. The point i wanted to make is that JVR is showing skills similar to that of Tomas Holmstrom. JVR isn't a sniper, or a superstar player scoring 11 goals. They're all coming from right outside the crease or in the crease it self. Aside from the snipe against the penguins when malkin turned it over, the other 10 goals were scored within 7ft of the net. He's grinding hard and scoring tough 'garbage goals' by driving the net.

Does he have what it takes to do this consistently? Can he have the same effect for our team and on the PP that Holmstrom had in Detroit ? A huge net presence is key for any teams success, the Luke Schenn / JVR trade is working out beautifully for us.

Can we stop making these comparisons to other players? It is insulting enough to compare Kadri to Doug Gilmour.

He's been great so far, so have the majority of leafs though. Loved the trade then, love it even more now. But I can almost guarantee this board will quickly turn against him when he goes cold for a while. He's 23 years old, maybe give him more than 18 games before crowning him the next Holmstrom, there's still going to be some ups and downs with this kid before he solidifies his game.

Holmstrom was a beast infront of the net, watching JVR i see the same thing. Am i dumb for pointing it out ? or are you dumb for not noticing ?

Love him. I was an advocate of a Schenn trade for years, and i was ecstatic that Burke was able to land JVR for him. I'm pretty critical of Burke, but this was one of his better trades in my opinion.

JVR is a better all around player than Holmstrom. But I doubt he will ever be able to do what Holmstrom got away with in front of goalies.

I hope JvR turns into a little more than just the next Holmstrom.

Uhh... I don't see any Holmstrom in JVR haha. JVR IS a (budding) superstar. I think a Rick Nash comparison is much better

Was a big fan of Schenn and critical of the trade.

Schenn is a great stay at home defenseman and even if he showed no improvement, he's still a very valuable player.

Jvr was a boom or bust type of player. Under achieving frequently injured player in his young career an I thought the trade was an unnecessary risk. I was fed up of Burke losing out on the risks he took.

But holy Christ, jvr looks like the real deal this far.

He does look quicker out there now - especially doing his double loop around the Buffalo zone on that PK tonight.

I think the injury to his foot really bothered him to start the season.

Now that he's seemingly over it, you can really see that he's a strong skater out there with sweet hands.

Such a good trade, I feel bad for Burke. You can really see his some of his work paying off He wasn't perfect but this organization is light years ahead of 3-4 years ago.

Who would think he'd be up there in terms of goal scorers at the beginning of the year? Not me. Looking good.

He's apparently focusing on improving a particular part of his game, but didn't want to say what though, as to not give it away to his opposition. Like that he's focused/determined to improve.

Love the deal. Hope Schenn does well in Philly and has a blast playing with his brother. But right now We've got 1 of the top 5 leading goal scorers in the NHL.

Keep on rockin'

I don't really see the Holmstrom comparison either. Holmstrom is slow, not overly skilled, but unreal in front of the net, makes an art out of screening goalies and jumping on rebounds. JVR uses his size/strength well, and goes to the net, but he's a very different type of player. He's fast, a good puck handler, has a good shot, he's a dynamic and skilled offensive player who also goes to the net. He doesn't seem to be an unreal garbage man (like Holmstrom), but as a big, strong, skilled forward, it's one of the many things he can do well.

As others have mentioned, to me he's much more of a poor man's Rick Nash than a Holmstrom. Calling JVR the next Holmstrom is like calling Karlsson the next Chara just because Karlsson and Chara both have great slappers. Sure, that's one thing they both do well, but overall they're very different players.

Whoever you want to compare JVR to, I think we can all agree that he's been playing great hockey. I'm VERY happy with the trade so far, Schenn wasn't making overly positive contributions here, while JVR has been one of our best players, and a big part of why we've been winning so many games.

Couple that with last year's sixth best (and tenth when Lupul went down) and the work to bring some of these players in is beginning to take on a different look enitrely.

JVR and Kessel are building great chemistry together similar to what Lupul and Kessel had. Honestly who ever plays with Kessel is simply just better... JVR ???? - KESSEL is going to be a solid line for team USA in sochi.

I agree with the Rick Nash comparison. That's exactly what we have in JVR.
