was listening to Dreger on TSN 1050 this morning. Dreger is confident that Nonis will need to make a move sooner rather then later. With a surplus of depth on the backend and bodies soon to come off the IR.
He mentioned that Carolina is "scouring" the market for a depth defenseman and Toronto makes a lot of sense, with Liles and Komisarek now being healthy scratches on a nightly basis.
Steve Simmonds hinted that he could see Liles going with some salary retained by Toronto... (but i wouldnt look into simmonds)

Yeah and Nonis said yesterday that they need to make room for Gardiner.
Detroit, with Carlo Coliaicovo, Smith, Kindl, Kronwall, Ericsson, Lashoff, White, Huskins and Quincey all being healthy or close to healthy, has too many D. Picks and prospects would be fine.
I don't think Toronto would retain salary in a deal for liles... His contract is reasonable but the bigger reason is the fact that teams can only carry 2 retained salaries... I don't see teams using this option on players with more than 1-2 yrs left on their contract...unless of course the return is too good to refuse
If a team retains salary do they also retain the same salary cap hit? If so, then it made sense to take the hit for Lombardi because there was only one year left on his contract and the Leafs have lots of cap space this year.
But Liles is in the first year of a four-year contract. I would be cautious about retaining a cap hit in this case. IMO there is a team who would take Liles with no strings attached. If not, then he can be bought out next summer with no cap repercussions.
I won't be surprised if Rutherford goes after Liles given his love affair with offensive defensemen, but I won't be happy as that really isn't what Carolina needs given they have Pitkanen, McBain, Faulk, Corvo, Sanguinetti (and Murphy likely next year). What they lack and need a more physical, defensive defenseman.
The Canes also can't afford to take on too much salary/cap hit if they want to re-sign Semin because guys like Skinner, J. Staal, and Harrison all have increases in salary / cap. (they only have about $11M in space next year with quite a few players to sign).
I'll be royally pissed if Rutherford gives up much in the way of picks/prospects for someone like Liles, Komisarek, etc.. Guys like Gunnarson, Kostka, Holzer make more sense for Carolina, but I'd be surprised if Nonis moved any of them.
